IN any democratic nation like ours, protection of lives and property of citizens is extremely important. There are many numerous challenges confronting Nigeria.

Issue of insecurity is one of the key problems in our great nation. We all know that the primary assignment of law enforcement agents is to ensure adequate protection of lives and property of citizens, but the incessant killings of  innocent Nigerians by Lagos State police officers have become everyday affairs. We are not happy with what is happening in Lagos State and if care is not taken, innocent citizens will continue to die.

In April 2009, Kausarat Muritala, who was three year-old, was reportedly shot by a 35 year- old police corporal, in Ketu. Evidence revealed that the perpetrator could not claim ignorance of his action as a trained police officer.

In order to be above board, the killer of Kausarat should be made to face the wrath of law. Yet, the death of Kausarat was a big loss to Mr and Mrs Saliu Muritala. There is no gainsaying the fact that life has no duplicate and only God Himself knows what little Kausarat would have become in life.

On Thursday, September 20, 2012, a middle-age man, Mr Ugochukwu Ozuah, was allegedly killed by policemen after five days of his wedding.

The story of the deceased was published in the Punch Newspaper of Friday, September 28, 2012 in which the mother of the deceased, Mrs Chinwe Ozuah, lamented: “Police killed my son, I want justice.” Details on page 4 & 5.

Inspector-General of Police, Mr Mohammed Abubakar, ordered the Federal Criminal Investigation Department to carry out a thorough investigation into the case and fish out the perpetrators, but at the end of the day, the police were held responsible for the death of Mr Ozuah. The question here is; for how long shall we continue like this?
