A Senator, Olubunmi Adetumbi (ACN Ekiti) on Tuesday condemned the use of a military training helicopter for use by civilians during the burial of the father of a presidential adviser, Oronto Douglas.

Speaking during a debate on the urgent need to investigate the recent helicopter crash in Bayelsa, Senator Adetumbi said the death of the former Kaduna State Governor, Patrick Yakowa, former National Security Adviser Andrew Azazi and others was as a result of the failure of the system to address the issue of corruption.

According to him, the crashed helicopter is called a military training helicopter, but it is obviously not being used for military training on that day.

He said that pertinent questions, such as who authorised the use of the helicopter for civilian purposes must be asked and answers given.
“Who gave the order for the chopper to be used? What is the purpose of private charter helicopter? Why was a private chopper not hired? Is it what the Navy appropriation is being used for?” Senator Adetumbi asked.

I do wonder what Pa Douglas has done for Nigeria that the nations limited resources are diverted for such private uses on occasion of his burial and why government officials on the countries very generous payroll have to attend rather than do their duties.

Are these questions necessary?

People should please get their facts right before talking.

First of all, Oronto Douglas hired private Helicopters and boats to ferry his guest to the Burial.

Secondly, the Navy Helicopter was carrying a five star general who has all the pilverages of a serving general including the use of their vehicles.

Thirdly, there is nothing special about the design of that particular helicopter that makes it only to be used for naval purposes only. Infact, that aircraft might even be a gift from one of these oil companies.

1. He was retired
2. He was a General not an Admiral
3. They weren't attending a National or military function.
4. He is no longer a member of the Fed Govt.
