K2DaC:

thats so pretty thanks grin

but what does that mean.

If I'm interpreting correctly, it means literally, 'The Eye of God.' but it could mean 'Someone dear to God' figuratively.

Must you give your kids Igbo names?
Re: Igbo Names & Their Meanings by alpacaem(f): 7:10pm On Aug 09, 2006
It's not a case of MUST, it's a case of WANT - it's part of them!

Igbo name: Kalada, I'm fairly certain that this is a girl's name but I've seen it used for boys.

n.b. To the original poster - slightly off topic but not really - may I advise serious consideration before giving a child an Igbo name, as a mixed race young person my English mother was proud to give me a traditional Igbo name out of respect for my heritage - for which I am thankful - however I feel obliged to highlight the downside of such a choice which unfortunately includes mispronunciation, spelling errors, instant spell-check blunders and merciless bullying from white peers
Re: Igbo Names & Their Meanings by alpacaem(f): 8:11pm On Oct 08, 2006
I am proud to be naming all my children with igbo names.
They will also have English names - and when they are old enough they can choose which they want to be known by.
As for spelling and pronouncation - doesn't really matter, I'm English and their are many different English / welsh & Scottish names we can't spell or pronounce.
Its part of their history and who they are and think when they are old enough they will too appreciate it.
They will also be fluent in igbo and English as part of their upbringing.
It's important to me and my husband that they know both sides of their family.
You can't know who you are or where your going until you know where your from.

Hi All,

I am a South African and cannot speak Igbo. What does the name Emeka actually mean? I am a great follower of His Excellency Chief EMEKA ANYAOKU. I have always thought that I would name my son after him. But I need to know the meaning of the name first. Regards, Mzi
Re: Igbo Names & Their Meanings by kamsi(f): 12:00am On Nov 04, 2006
Mzi, Emeka is a shortened word. The full name is chukwuemeka which basically means God's grace or more literally that God has done a wonderfull or marvelous work or deed. Ok what of these names which belongs to my precious two(the names are unisex)
Kamsiyochukwu (kamsi) meaning my heart desire or literally how i asked God.
Kaobimdi(kobi) meaning also my heart desire or what is in my heart
Re: Igbo Names & Their Meanings by Mzi(m): 6:36am On Nov 04, 2006
Dear Kamsi, many thanks for your reply.
Re: Igbo Names & Their Meanings by chinani(f): 11:26pm On Nov 05, 2006
Wow, thanks for the post Kamsi. I didn't know of those names.

Oh, I really love Kamsiyochuckwu. It's so lovely. cheesy Kaobimdi, I also like but I'd be afraid that people would think I call my child "Kobi" after the American bb player (a ridiculous man). What do you think? Anyone ever ask you that?
Re: Igbo Names & Their Meanings by kamsi(f): 1:03am On Nov 06, 2006
Yes people that are aware of the bb player. Its not a common name right now but am quite sure in a few years it would be. Chinani, what is d meaning of ur name.
Re: Igbo Names & Their Meanings by chinani(f): 2:09am On Nov 06, 2006
I don't know. embarassed *Chinani's not really my name. I found it online. I picked the name b/c it sounds Igbo. http://www.ngex.com/personalities/babawilly/dictionary/pidgino.htm Look under omoge.

My name is Ogonnaya. Her father's in-law or namesake of her father's in-law. embarassed Not impressed by it myself, but it's seen me this far so what can I do. But you know how it goes if you don't see your people everyday. . .some of my cousins swear my name is Ijeoma.

*Doesn't "chinani" sound so pretty though? What should you say it means?*

Re: Igbo Names & Their Meanings by tellmemore(m): 9:50am On Nov 06, 2006
People remember sometimes Igbo names given depend on the area of the Igbo land you come from. For instance my name is Kalu its usually those from Ohafia, Arochukwu and some parts of Abia State that beer such names. Thou many other names are answered generally.
Also Most of the names given so far on this thread were coined out of Christianity (I think) there are still the traditional names. I cannot remember them for now but when I do I’ll post a couple of them later.
Re: Igbo Names & Their Meanings by chinani(f): 1:13am On Nov 08, 2006
Good point Tellmemore. I'm from Abia and I'm so used to "kalu" I didn't know it wasn't a name everywhere in Igbo state until you just told me. I like that though, b/c it adds to variety.

Also, there are some new names I like. As long as they sound Igbo enough I'm down. Occasionally I test one of these name s off my mom and she's like huh?. As for other names, I tend to be biased to the older "fetish" meanings. It's our culture.
Re: Igbo Names & Their Meanings by kamsi(f): 1:05am On Nov 14, 2006
chinani, ogonnaya could also mean a father's good deed because OGO means good deed.
Re: Igbo Names & Their Meanings by chinani(f): 1:45am On Nov 20, 2006
Ogo means in-law (to us anyway).

the truth is that you guys are typing the ones that sound pleasing to you, how about
Akagbusi   -  Soothes a baby thats not so pretty
Iwuagwu  - call your baby that at your own risk
Obiageli     - Not very advisable for a female child
?

Hotspepper do you want to translate those to us?   grin

I think it depends on where the emphatic stress is

Ogo' - means good deeds
O'go - means in-law
