Nigeria-trained Doctors Rank Second On UK Blacklist . by manuch(m): 1:25am On Jan 01, 2013
A DARK cloud seems to be hanging over Nigeria–trained doctors desiring to practise in the United Kingdom.

Figures released under the Freedom of Information Request by a British tabloid, the Daily Mail, reveal that three-quarters of the doctors struck off the General Medical Council (GMC) register in the past years are foreign-trained and that those trained in Nigeria rank second on the list of those removed from the professional register of the GMC .

According to the figures published in the Mail article of yesterday, India-trained doctors top the list of foreign-trained doctors to be struck off the GMC register in the past five years and Nigeria-trained doctors have the record of being second.

Egypt-trained doctors occupy the third spot. The paper revealed further that “194 of the 285 doctors struck off for misconduct or incompetence in the past five years were foreign-trained, while 29 of the 39 removed from the medical register in the past year received their medical degree overseas.”

Continuing, the paper disclosed that “with only one-third of the 250,000 doctors on the medical register trained outside the United Kingdom, this means that those from overseas were more than five times likely than British doctors to be banned.”

Quoting the data it obtained under the Freedom of Information Request - the equivalent of Nigeria’s Freedom of Information Act - the Mail revealed that “India has the largest number of doctors struck off in Britain since 2008, followed by Nigeria and Egypt.”

This is in sharp contrast to Hong Kong, which has the best record, “with none of more than 700 doctors working here – in the UK – struck off or disciplined in the past five years. New Zealand’s 600 medics also have a clean record.”

Based on the revelations, the paper quoted Julia Manning, the chief executive of the 2020 Health think-tank, as saying “these figures are really worrying and shocking” and that “we need to take a hard look at the assessment of all doctors coming into the country

shocking and alarming

Honestly, this is indeed very alarming and requires to be checked.
I'm of the view that the medical regulatory bodies; Nigeria Medical Association (NMA), Medical and Dental Council of Nigeria (MDCN) and others should as a matter of urgent importance re-appraise the content and delivery frame work of our medical courses and clinicals in all our medical schools/colleges across the country without compromising international standards so as to addressing this very urgly trend.
This kind of embarassing display of gross incompetence which our doctors have been found wanting of, is totally UNACCEPTABLE and should be abhorred in its entirety.

Does the UK not retrain Nigerian-trained doctors before letting them care for patients without supervision?
Retraining is not just about passing exams

Racism in action, nothing to do with their competence for the most part

If our country wasn't this messed up,why won't our doctors stay in Nigeria where they are treated with more dignity
A friend just told she was quitting her job with NHS to go private,I asked why?

you've not seen anything yet.NMA,MDCN are still busy covering up all the medical malpractices perpetuated by our poorly trained doctors while all the experienced doctors are preoccupied with sharing the loot and cornering all juicy political offices in health administration in the country.

All the blame should go to Olikoye Ransome-kuti,he was the one that started the coup and suddenly doctors hijacked all administrative structures of health in nigeria, now he is gone and all the few trained hands are more absorbed with the allure of political appointment in health, leaving the training to greenhorns.Imagine, medical interns are being paid teaching allowance shocked shocked to teach heaven-knows who.Even with increased pay, what do we still get?A doctor will abandon a patient and proceed on strike and in the event that the patient dies during the strike, the nigerian doctor resumes and life goes on.no compensation to the relatives of the dead and no punishment meted out to the doctor. They carry on with this mentality until they get to well organised society before they realise what they are doing is ethically wrong.

In Nigeria, a doctor sets up a mushroom facility called clinic, calls in fellow compromised doctors to acredit it even though the whole complement of the healthcare team is completely non-existent shocked shocked,at the end of the day,he does the job of everybody shocked shocked.A nigerian doctor was sanctioned the last time for bringing blood samples into UK,he completely forgot that there are procedures and professionals trained to handle such things, eventually he was sanctioned.
We are not ready for serious nation-building in this country.nigerian health sector is a complete sham and extremely chaotic. All that is going on is politics and professional rivalry due to the error done by Olikoye Ransome-kuti.
Administration of health itself is a professional course and it is so practised in other countries and in nigeria before olikoye came as minister. We should revert to the period when the health professionals are completely insulated from the politics of the health ministry.

Nigerians will always display their true colours wherever they go.

Nigerians are harsh and live harsh lives. Shouting at every and anything.

They have no compassion , gentleness or empathy and that shows through when they deal with patients. All they think about is their money and prestige.

You can survive without compassion and care of your patients in Nigeria (and even refuse to consider patients who don't have money ) but in the UK, USA , Europe et al, it won't wash!

I agree with you to some extent.all health workers play politics:nurses, doctors, pharmacist, lab scientists.in nigeria the only lucrative business is politics.the problem is not only in health sector.all sectors in nigeria are not performing.and most of these sectors are being managed by the so called administrators.most administrators are thieves.in usa salary of an hospital administrator is between $50 to 70k while least paid nurse get 80k per annum.there is corruption in the country.i think the solution is ppp.the private company is asked to manage the affair of key sectors of economy viz: health, education, road, power, sport etc.government will finance the institutn and supervise the private firm .the private firms will handle human resources and organizational efficiency.more so unionism must be banned in health sector.all health workers must be prevented from embarking in industrial action.

Standard needs to be maintained, I have never heard of Medical and Dental Council of Nigeria (MDCN) suspending or banning its members. Its either they are all above board or there is no standard.

Lets learn to understand the motive behind certain actions before making free comments. The Britush are very conservative and biase in their dealings with foreigners in their soil. Why has such reports not been in America and other liberal societies. In irony, Indian and to some extents Nigerians are part of the shining light in America's medical profession. The problem isn't about intellectual know how but ethics and administration. The Medical and Dental Council of Nigeria works in tandem with the British Generlal Medical Council( GMC), so any issue of accreditation failure affects the ranking of our local health institution before them as we suffered in the past two years when some Nigerian medical schools were blacklisted by MDCN.

This is the consequence of proliferation of private universities in Nigeria where license is practically bought with money.
Re: Nigeria-trained Doctors Rank Second On UK Blacklist . by Tolexander: 10:24am On Jan 01, 2013
that is the consequence of bad leadership and followership anyway.
But our doctors are still trying anyway cos considering the archaic medical instruments they use in training, lack of smooth academic calendar due to the ASUU-fg disagreement, lack of good academia amenities, they still tried in making somethings do from their 'la cram la pour'

Nigeria is a democratic country in paper, but rogue in practice.Everything that goes on in that country is wrong.People at the helm of affairs sees themselves as demi-god and can do whatever their primitive minds deem right at the expense of the society at large.

It a country managed by re-tards and one shouldnt expect the medical section to be any different.Uduagan who is the number re-tard of delta state is a "medical doctor".It is a very primitive world out there, hundreds of years behind a normal and rational society.

What do you expect when instead of reading medical textbooks you are reading the bible or attending 'revivals' everytime.
