Re: Ubuntu Linux by mimohmi(m): 11:31pm On Nov 21, 2006 |
@adewaleafolabi Where you still able to connect with your celtel, if no. Here is the solution. Had to collect a friend's motorola blade. The problem with the previous solution was that we did not set the primary and secondary DNS IP addresses. So, got the DNS ip address from windows. Also make sure you use PAP autentication. Ok, here are the DNS ip addresses DNS Servers . . . . . . . . . . . : 196.46.241.5 196.46.241.6 Don't forget the phone number is #999# User Name 0000 password 0000 This should get your gprs up. |

Guys i'm in a fix, First of all, I couldn't get automatix to download, i followed all the steps on their site - no luck I downloaded real player 10 Gold for linux but could not install the .bin file. automatic installation did not work either. I understand Yahoo messenger for linux is quite old and i'm not feeling GAIM at all. Can I install Red Hat on the same system? What is the difference between Xubuntu, Kubuntu and Ubuntu? |
Re: Ubuntu Linux by mimohmi(m): 12:38am On Nov 22, 2006 |
Hey guys lets not give up. Quitters never win and Winners never quits. Ok, the problem with installing Linux on a system with windows already installed is always getting the partition right. Most of with laptops bought them with windows pre-installed. So, if you must keep your windows, you have to resize the partitions first. You can use partition magic, version 8 recommended. What it does is that it is able to determine the size of your hard drive presentely occupied by windows and the free space in the Hard drive. So, you just give the size you want for windows and the remaining part becomes free for you to install your linux. To install linux in general, always boot from the cdrom, then follow the wizard, then you get to the partition aspect, always look for manual partitioning option, here you need to create at lest two partitions, a root partition with a / and a swap partition. As a rule of thumb, the swap size should be at lest twice the size of your RAM. If you already have up to 3 partitions, create a logical partition, where the linux partition will be created. Like on my system, I had C, system recovering drive and e drives before i installed by ubuntu. So after using partition magic to resize my window partition, i had to create a logical partition as against a primary partition type. All you need to do this is the partition manager that comes with ubuntu, same with other linux systems (it's GUI, so always easy to use). Finally, I created my root, swap, home, opt usr and var linux partitions. If you don't know the exact size to allocate to these partitions, just create the swap as discuss above and allocate the remaining to root partition, linux will create the remaining partition using default value as size. Most times that will just be ok. Alway allow linux to configure the X windows during installation, it is able to probe your VGA and monitor. You might have to supply few info, but don't worry, it is gui stuff, so easy to fill. Then setting up dual booting, most linux these days uses the gruid boot loader as aginst lilo. Choose the default OS, so that when you power on the system, gruid gives you some time to select the os you want to boot, use the down arrow to select it or the default option will be loaded. Wao, very long I guess, so just get started and post the problem as you progress, and we tackle them along that line to. @heyprof, lets get started again. Together we all can learn. |

Re: Ubuntu Linux by adewaleafolabi(m): 11:42pm On Nov 22, 2006 |

Re: Ubuntu Linux by 1ofall(f): 1:35pm On Nov 23, 2006 |
Hi all, Mimoh_mi, I successfully installed ubuntu on my laptop and it worked fine, however, when I tried to install windows on another partition, it only saw the partitions with linux. Anyway, I reinstalled windows and then went to install ubuntu(Iam using edgy) but it hangs at 55% and won't go any further, any ideas?? I've used the options of letting it install on the largest empty space, and manually configuring the partitions, ps: I 've downloaded ubuntu 2ice so far as someone had suggested it might be a problem with the image I got, even though it installed fine when it was by itself. 1 Like 1 Share |
Re: Ubuntu Linux by adewaleafolabi(m): 6:07pm On Nov 23, 2006 |
@1stofall well i still have some k/ubuntu cds left if interested let me know @everyone i was able to get back my redhat 9 login screen on my ubuntu. i did some crude work initially but finally all i just had to do was edit this file \etc\kde3\kdm\kdrmc then changed this line Theme=/usr/share/apps/kdm/themes/circles note that circles is the name of the KDM theme theres is ubuntu by default ok. so if you download a kdm theme just extract it to your Desktop then fire up the terminal and enter the following command cd Desktop sudo mv name of theme /usr/share/apps/kdm/themes/circles then edit your kdrmc file @mimoh i dont know why this stuff refused to connect can you just upload your connection file here plzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz am waiting |
