Norway pays Sweden to take its trash, Sweden gets the heat and electricity, and Sweden exports the burned debris back to Norway. Swedes aren’t producing enough garbage for their successful watse-to-energy program.

Sweden is apparently way too good at recycling.

In a country where only 4 percent of waste goes to landfills, officials have had to start importing trash so they can keep making heat and electricity.

The Scandinavian country runs a wildly successful waste-to-energy program, generating 20 percent of the nation’s district heating and generating electricity for a quarter-million homes.

But Swedes just aren’t producing enough garbage for the program and have found a unique solution: importing trash from neighboring Norway, according to a Public Radio International report.

The deal works out pretty well for Sweden.

Norway pays Sweden to take its trash, and Sweden gets heat and electricity and then exports the burned debris back to Norway.

“So that’s why we have the world’s best incineration plants concerning energy efficiency,” Senior Advisor for the Swedish Environmental Protection Agency Catarina Ostlund told PRI.

“But I would say maybe in the future, this waste will be valued even more, so maybe you could sell your waste because there will be a shortage of resources within the world,” Ostlund said.

Thinking about the future, Ostlund said she would like to see Sweden import trash from countries outside Scandinavia.

“I hope that we instead will get the waste from Italy or from Romania or Bulgaria or the Baltic countries because they landfill a lot in these countries,” she said. “They don’t have any incineration plants or recycling plants, so they need to find a solution for their waste.”

This wouldn’t be a long-term solution, Ostlund said, because as time goes on, countries really just need to start reusing and recycling better.

the amount of waste in 9ja can generate all the electricity we need wt such technology. we dont value wat we have.

They are out to improve their economy , we are out to write and speak like the Queen of England. In our schools, Enlish language is given special place while subjects like Economics, Physics, chemistry etc that have more effect on our economic growth are not given priority.

How many years ago now that Jakande started trash to energy? It was abadoned.

Oh my dear Naija, when shall we also get there? With all these big University/polytechnic engineers and professors, that are always going on strike demanding for better pay; can't we also demand that they must compulsorily introduce innovations that make tech sense? I was at a NURESDEF some time ago, and what I was seeing wasn't encouraging at all. Univs were displaying really crude, mundane stuff, in this tech era.
If govt is paying you well, then you should also advance the frontiers of innovation for the benefit of the country. If you don't do it, who will Now all of them university profs are rich people, buying luxury cars for themselves and their children, building big houses, attending conferences everywhere and getting paid big bucks, but doing next to thing as per research in current technology that really matters.

I watched a documentary on this on BBC. Sweden also imports garbage from the UK.

Scandinavian countries are by far the most humane and technologically most advanced countries.

Imagine importing trash!there's a huge difference btw a developed,and developing nation.when in a country like ours,where emphasize is made on paper qualification,and not individual ability. Despite the many universities we have,Nigeria can't boast of common simple technology. Ȋ̝̊̅† shows Nigeria is a consuming,and not a producing nation.
