Comparing Nigeria to Zambia, when you are supposed to be the so called big brother of African and the giant?
You think BBC pays the same amount with NTA during world cups and the Olympics?
No wonder your leaders take you lot for fools. They will say: Building a modern equipped hospitals is too expensive, because themselves and their family can afford to pay through the nose abroad to get the benefits of a good one abroad. Job BON my backside!! What for the life of my is 4.5million Euros to Nigeria, to starve their citizens and taxpayer a very little enjoyment of a football game?

You are comparing the population viewing audience in SA to Nigeria? with NTA having 38 substations and hundred of radio stations, that is a lot of money to be made from advertising.
Will the likes of Maku and members of the BON watch the games? Of course they will, because they can afford sat' channels.

My brother, What we keep forgetting is that the member stations of BON are the ones that'll repay whatever BON as an organization pays for the rights.

In the case when the member stations tell BON they don't have the financial capability to foot such an amount as proposed by LC2, what do you want them to do? This is business man! They said they won't be able to get enough from adverts to cover for their investments.

Unless you're asking the Nigerian Government to pay and be the father christmas for private stations. And thereby allowing LC2 and CAF to continue treating us as money-miss-roads willing to dole out any amount of money, regardless of whether the venture is profitable or not.

Maxymilliano: Why We Couldn't Pay For Live Transmission Of AFCON 2013 – Maku

The Minister of Information, Mr Labaran Maku on Monday said that Nigeria’s inability to broadcast live matches from the African Nations Cup was in the interest of sports development in the country.

Maku said this during an inspection of ongoing work at the Inland River Port in Oguta, Imo.

The minister, who apologised to Nigerians for the blackout on live matches of the tournament, said that the demand of the rights holder was highly exploitative.

According to Maku, “it is necessary for Nigeria to call their bluff because they were not willing to bring down the price despite efforts by the Broadcasting Organisation of Nigeria (BON)

“All efforts made by BON through the agent LC2 did not work. From eight million euros, they came to six million then 4.5 million Euro; so you can see that it is not a scientific charge, it is a kind of casino pricing.

“BON decided that this year, Nigeria should call the bluff of this agent and maybe next time the Confederation of African Football will be more sensitive when it comes to hiring of agents to vent the broadcasting rights of the African Nations Cup,” he said.

The minister said that Nigeria would no longer tolerate agents who would turn the country into a cash cow.

“Nigeria cannot be a cash cow for every agent to come and exploit. We have to call the bluff of people that want to abuse our generosity.

“We are making this collective sacrifice for a better future. We will work with BON to agree on a new formula for these prices and we will want to see that what we pay should not be different from any other African country.”

He said that broadcast stations would have ran at a loss because no telecommunications company would have advertised knowing that this year’s Nations Cup was sponsored by Orange, also a telecommunications company.

He said that the Federal Government had offered to augment the cost if BON could negotiate a fair price but the agents said they could not move from the price tag they were offering.

“BON advised government not to intervene.

“They said they will not want the government to use public money to any agent because it is not good to our country and the agent has not treated Nigeria fairly.”

He however assured that Nigerians would get a better deal in 2014.

Several efforts by BON to strike a deal with the right holders, LC2 did not yield any result. (NAN)

In a nutshell, we should tolerate any garbage thrown at us so long as Nigerians are happy right?

If a government can't make her people happy, then of what use is it? We shouldn't deceive ourselves, things in Nigeria always cost more than elsewhere because operating cost in Nigeria is always higher than other places... The price can't be the same for Nigeria and Ghana when we have more than 3 times the number of viewers of Ghana.

Bro, profit maximization is the primary aim of any business venture, are you saying BON should jettison such ethic to make Nigerians happy? Don't forget that it is not a Federal Government thing.

The tournament is already branded, how can you throw away such humongous amount on what may not be profitable on the long run? I'm talking of economic sense here.

Kx: Why wont BON call their bluff?

If a whole NEPA could have generator sets and i better pass my neigbour,
who says BON offices dont have dstv's in their offices to watch the matches live?

Nigerians should nt just blame the uncaring govt, blame poverty as well.
Poverty and the in-ability to afford dstv made a lot of Nigerians unable to call the govts bluff and hook up to dstv.
Poverty denies u the ability to afford subsititues when d govt dont care.

i guess its poverty that made you to assess the situation poorly? your problem above isnt poverty but corruption, stand up to it

Esiere: The pricing obviously will be based on population. A leopard can't change its skin. A bad government can't think about masses first and put as second their own interests. Mr Maku enjoys every second of the AFCON because he has access to paytv . Go to Aso Rock, they are enjoy it. Mr Maku should stop insult the masses sensibilities. If it were to be something that will benefit them...they won't think twice befoe doing it. Mr Maku keep fooling yourself. Be truthful to yourself....is the money up to what you alone stole last year. Close to 170 million are meant to watch it.

Most of what people have replied to this thread is nothing but bullocks&lack business intelligence
Lets the figures below speak

2012 AFCON TV rights
$2.2 million for ALL CAF competitions=€1.65 million=346 million naira

2013 AFCON TV rights
$11mill=€8.25 mill=1.73 billion Naira just for SA 2013

Reduced to $6.4 mill=€4.8 mill=1.005 billion naira

Question 1:What led to a 291% increase for ONLY one CAF competition in one year?
Question 2:True,Nigeria has the 'biggest' market in Africa yet what is their purchasing power compared to a SA? Since Orange(telecomms),Stanbic(banks)&Samsung(electronics) are CAF sponsors, the ONLY VIABLE remaining sponsors are beverage, alcoholic drinks&FMCG companies?
Pray, how will BON & affliate private stations make a profit seeing MOST Nigerians are interested only Nigeria's matches?
Or LC2 is looking to the FGN to pay for BON?
K

Is it because exhorbitant TV rights why Nigerians were regaled with mostly highlights during the Olympics?

DONT MIND THEM. It is ignorant, unreasonable and childish reactions to issues like this that makes you know that people especially Nigeria just criticise government just because it is government. LC2 just assumed that becuase of corruption in Nigeria, anything goes. They forgot that it is not government that is in charge of viewing rights for such events. ANY REASONABLE PERSON/NIGERIAN knows that BON, Government and all other stakeholders are very right on this one. To hell with LC2 and their corruption.

My Dear, You are shouting on top of your voice in your response but unfortunately you dont know that you are just displaying your acute ignorantce. It is very obvious here that you dont have any idea about what is really happening. You are calling the minister ignorant while you are the real ignoramus.

"From eight million euros, they came to six million then 4.5 million Euro; so you can see that it is not a scientific charge, it is a kind of casino pricing". what criteria dd LC2 used to arrive at the initial 8m, what options dd they consider that made them come down to 6m then 4.5m Euros. Can you tell the difference in the three prices. It is obvious that the pricing was unreasonable and based on "casino pricing"

ANSWER: How much is 4.5m Euros in Naira. What is the total cost of the rights that LC2 got from CAF, that they want to get 4.5m from only Nigeria. How much dd LC2 sell to Ghana, South Africa etc. and what consideration dd they use to charge them.

Our learders are bad we know but lets all know and say the right thing when we see it. That your mother is old and ugly doesnt make her a witch.

talktimi: if you didn't know the matches weren't going to be broadcast live in Nigeria, then you obviously spend more time watching papa ajasco than watching the news so stop blaming BON or anybody because they owe you nothing. Nta, ait, channels, silverbird etc are all free to air channels so and thrs no way they could have made any profit if they pool together €4.5 million which would have been a waste of time and finances, if you are a businessman you will understand better. BON which is an association of all broadcasters in Nigeria actually adviced the federal govt against even subsidising the cost of the broadcast right so pls do your research well. I support this action to the fullest, no south african or any other national has the right to exploit me I don't know about you
Debating something with people like you must be a waste of my time, because all you do is to jump into the water first before knowing it dept. NTA and your AIT DST are not the same. They may be free to air but you don't need a decoder to watch NTA in Nigeria or pay for it because its publicly owned and funded by the taxpayers.
Have you ask how BBC manage to show sports events even without commercial sponsorship because its against the law that establish it? Even though NTA is funded by the public, still they are allowed to sell their programmes to commercial sponsors including sports games. So what is 4.5 million euros NTA cannot afford to get a sponsor to cover such a meagre sum?
Jonathan should sack everyone at the commercial department if the whole NTA netwrok with almost 40 substations, with a 170 million viewing public power cannot sale and make profit for something they bought for just 4.5 millions. A sum most networks spent just to buy a news desk for their studio.

BON is a quango organisation which its existence serves no purpose. Just a job for the boys by the corrupt elite. We are in free market. All the networks should be able to go out there and bought themselves services that will make their viewers happy and that are saleable.

BskyB paid just few millions years ago to have the commercial right of the EPL, but the last deal that will expire this season, they paid well over a billion pound sterling and their is a prediction that the next round of deal may pass 2 billon because networks like Al Jazzera, ESPN are all interested. How can a television station in Nigeria cannot afford a meagre 4.5 million euro for 21 games, when they are commercially oriented?

It doesn't make any sense. Its just the wickedness of that society, one thing that is not exclusive to the rogue elite, they used the excuse of cost to take it away from the poor masses. This is a sum many of them spent on hospital bills in one-go many times in a year in europe etc.

Let's get some few things straight.
1. This is not about South Africa or Supersport. It's about LC2, the broadcast right owners, so pls stop using this as an excuse to bash SA. SA is even losing a lot in this tournament as CAF doesn't want them to lower ticket prices to allow more people into the stadiums.
2. That 4.5million Euros for Nigeria was very fair considering the population and what the stations stood to gain from adverts. Lots of companies e.g Guinness and other beverage companies. The TV stations/BON are getting unwarranted sympathy by playing on the psyche of the average Nigerian to feel cheated.
3. Nothing stops Telcos and Banks from advertising. Orange and Standard Bank are only sponsoring the tournament AND NOT THE BROADCAST. Ghana Commercial Bank are seriously advertising on GTV as the second biggest sponsor of it's broadcast after RLG.
4. I expect nigerians to be SMART and not accept lame excuses from these stations. THEY MAY HAVE ANGLED FOR BIGGER PROFITS IF THEY WERE IN THE POSITION OF LC2. They've failed and they must just admit it honourably rather than solicit cheap sympathy from undiscerning citizens.

What is BON? Under what statu does it exist and for who, if you are discounting the govt that owns NTA. What is 4.5 million euro for 21 games, that you can't get sponsors to cover such a meagre sum for NTA alone with more than 30 stations nationwide, excluding the private broadcasters?

Building a new terminal for private jets and chartered planes is way more expensive than 4 mil Euros for AFCON Rights. It's OK to see PDP,ANPP, ACN national conventions on TV, but not OK to see AFCON on TV cos you all have DSTV.

Close to 170 million are meant to watch it.
i suport SA did, if i have my way i wil tel them to 3ple the price. They see Nig as a very foollish country. A Job dat wil b don wit 10kUSD any place in d world Nig Gov wil use 150m. USD to do it here. So if they tink Nig is a country were any thing goes dnt blame them ok.
