Lagos Shut Mile 12 And Ketu Markets Over Abuse Of Sanitation Law by Nobody: 6:40am On Jan 23, 2013
In its strides to keep a healthy and sustainable environment in the state, the Lagos State government has shut down Mile 12 and Ketu fruit markets for not keeping to the state sanitation law.

Commissioner for the Environment, Tunji Bello, noted that both markets were closed for their flagrant abuse of the state environmental sanitation law and indiscriminate loading and off-loading of goods on the main road, thereby creating traffic bottlenecks for other road users.

According to him, there were inadequate toilets in the markets, while traders in the markets pollute the surrounding environment with human wastes.

He pointed out that the closure of the markets became inevitable after several unheeded warnings to forestall epidemics and other health hazards in the state.

Tunji Bello reiterated the fact the Government’s policy of not allowing traders reside in the market was still in force, adding that markets were meant for business activities and not for residential purposes and that converting markets for residential purpose would evidently have untoward consequences on the environment.

As conditions for the reopening of the markets, Commissioner Bello hinted that all illegal structures within the market must give way; traders in the market must make further commitment for patronizing the PSP operators and not cart pushers.

He also said that the traders must be prepared to re-organize the loading and off loading of their goods in such a way that would ensure free flow of traffic on the road.

“The traders in these markets must ensure their environment is clean, clear the adjoining road of street traders and make adequate provision for toilets to eradicate open defecation and urination, as well as sign an undertaking to abide by our sanitation laws before their markets can be re-opened” he noted.

The Commissioner further sounded a note of warning to all markets in the state that after several warnings and stakeholders meeting with respective market executives across the state, the state Government will not hesitate to shut down more markets if they refuse to abide and religiously observe the state sanitation Laws.

He also reminded Lagosians that global climatic weather conditions has become so unpredictable, as such, Lagosians should properly dispose their waste through LAWMA and authorized PSP operators.

Why can't dey build a mordern market with stalls, tar the roads and equip with mordern facilities and see if things won't change for better...just like the Ondo state government?
Until that happens, the unclean/terrible state of that market isn't going to change except its not re-opened.undecided

Sjurprise the commissioner is asking market women to build public toilet, organise loading and off loading, clear adjacent streets etc. What is the work of governments (local & state) if these women do all these task. Will tbey still collect tax from them?

God bless you as you have rightly hit the nail on the head and i don't know why people are applauding this inadequate move.

You are blessed for this comment and we should not be surprised as it is in places like Nigeria that you will hear such nonsense. Ofcourse they will still collect tax when they should have been the one to build a modern market and hand over the management to reputable hands. If the market was owned by a private business then how did they get approval if those things were not in place at first. Always putting the cart before the horse.

Fashola and his cronies are tribal bigots. He is always quick to close down anywhere his people are not predominant. A bomb ripped apart a building during the Christmas period inside Lagos causing several buildings there to quake. Till date, the owner of the warehouse that stored the explosive devices is never fished out and the market still thriving there; whereas an adjacent street that had a building burnt by fire in a separate incident had all the shops there shut-down since October last year with majority of the traders there being Ibos.

He has shut down mile 12 again for second time in less than six months. Ebute Ero market by the foot of Eko Bridge is worse than any other market in Lagos, yet nothing of such has ever happened there. The stench that oozes out of that market can kill. The traffic congestion it causes by shop owners who pack their vehicles right on top the bridge linking third mainland bridge is excruciating. There are double and triple packing on the bridge without any consideration to users. I have never seen a single LASTMA official there towing vehicles for wrong packing or challenging the chaos it creates simply because the Yorubas dominate the market. Fashola is worse than Awo in tribalism. His time will surely come and he will move over just like every bigot.

in other words,u think igbo traders and hausa traders should be allowed to have fiilthy markets simply because there are also other filtht ones with yoruba traders?

i fully agree with u that the dirty markets need to be dealt with, im just not sure about the rationale behind d tribalistic innuendoes.

by the way was it the owner of the building that housed the firecrackers that stored them there or the most likely igbo man that rented the shop?

anyways, you are free to have your persecution mania. but we lagosians will applaud every move that betters our lot, regardless of whether chidi or obi feels bad.

incase u dont agree, feel free to join the nearest bus to onitsha. i hear the markets there give dirt a bad name.

its not like there are markets dominated by yorubas in the east. because we dont play the tribal dogma like u folks does not mean we are stoopid. if u dont like our lagos please move to somewhere else.

abd FYI fashola is a saint. if u ever hear of what some people recommend to be done which fashola disagrees with, u will run back to ur village without prompting.

and as for the next governor being a dirty lackey that will encourage your excesses, u are sorely mistaken. it will only get worse till lagos shapes up.

Just incase you have no idea how dirty the market is, these traders cut fruit peals on the floor everywhere nd people walk over them till they turn into a mashed up paste+water during rainy seasons. I got stained in that same ketu market yesterday. And there's also this smelly running water comin out of the market onto the road everytime. What's with that Lovely move, i don't pity anyone of them.
