With all the insults and disrespect ABA gets on this forum, this city is about to put all others to shame. It is about to accomplish what other cities with way more money and resources couldn't do. This will be a game changer. ABA IS ABOUT TO BE THE FIRST NIGERIAN CITY WITH 24 HRS ELECTRICITY.(Mind you, this is not port harcourt phantom 24hr eletricity by DEC.2012) Once Geometrics power flips that switch in March,2013, then Nigeria will for the first time in history know what industrial revolution feels like. NO wonder why smart business men are salivating to pounce on the opportunity and set up factories. Look up the recent ranking by the business community. That says a lot.

Disclaimer: The above comments are in no way meant to support the Governor of Abia state. For he is not responsible for this success. I don't support him and never will. So don't accuse me.

It was Amaechi, who has no idea whatsoever on what it takes provide 24hrs, that made that promise. This time, the company that made this PROMISE is completely privately owed ( though with govt providing enabling environment for them- eg the state tarred a road leading to the power plant)

OP.... have you ever heard of the saying "don't count your chickens before they hatch".

Even if it is realised, and I sincerely hope it will be.....why boast arrogantly? Why alienate others who may celebrate with Aba, if/when this is achieved?

Aba has access to the biggest NIPP in the nation 1073 MW ALAOJI power plant.

Aba has the biggest IPP In the nation of 780MW. With three phases. Geometrics power plant

This will make ABA a totally different city in the next 3-5 years starting from this march.

If I have given any wrong information here, please call me out with counter facts not mere sentiments.

For real it ain't a tall dream, this is POSSIBLE within the stipulated time in the Aba I know! Aba is heavily commercialized and well exposed when it comes to small to medium scale businesses. This is a cheering news for Nigeria and especially my Igbo brothers and sisters wink

How do you know that Abia state government has built a road leading to the power plant? There was a story on NL last year about how Prof. Barth Nnaji was not happy with gov. Orji over the governor's unwillingness to build road(s) to the power plants. Besides, you says that you live in Enugu. Have you been to Aba(the power plants site) recently ? Are you sure of your claims here?

Nearly cannot kill a bird. The Aba I know has not had 10hrs uninterrupted power supply in the last 2 to 3yrs.
I am an Abian so do not think I am badmouthing. Umuahia has by far better supply than Aba. If in March 2013, Aba gets 15hrs straight, I will be shocked.

I dont have to live in Aba to know what happens there. The truth I know and can CONFIRM is that the state govt is constructing a road to the company but I'm not sure if the work has been completed. If the work has not been completed, then contractors must still be on site.

The company is also receiving other support from federal govt. Recently, some Igbo elders visited Mr president and issues concerning Geometrics was discussed, among other things. It was reported that Mr president pledged to give every necessary support to ensure that Geometric power plant comes alive.

[b]First Private Power Plant to Take off in March
21 Jan 2013

By Adebiyi Adedapo

The first privately power generating plant in the country, Geometric Power Link, located in Aba, Abia State, is set to commence operation by March 2013.
Managing Director of the Plant, and wife offormer Minister of Power, Prof. Bart Nnaji, Mrs. Agatha Nnaji, told the National Good Governance Team on a visit to the site that the generation and distribution sections of the plant were fully ready to befired.
Nnaji stated that the 140-megawatt capacity plant would be fired into operation in March, adding that the plant would supply power to Aba and its environs.
She stated that all the major and ancillary work had been completed and that the three turbines at the power plant had beeninstalled and the gas supply pipeline from Shell Petroleum facility close to the plant had been completed.
¡°We have completed all the major works on this project; we have laid the pipeline for the supply of gas to the plant. The distribution facility is also near completion, so by March, the first turbine will be fired and the remaining two will follow shortly,¡± she said.
Nnaji also said the company had completed the construction of four substations at different locations in Abia and planned to refurbish three substations that were bought over from PHCN.
The Good Governance Team also visited the 1,074MW capacity Alaoji Power plant, which is expected to service Imo, Abia, and Rivers states. The 1st and 2nd units ofthe Geometric turbines were said to be launched already, while the 3rd and 4th is ready to be unveiled.
The first four units of the turbines are expected to be fully operational by June 2013 to 504 megawatts power supply.
Meanwhile, Minister of Information, Labaran Maku, has condemned Valance Nigeria Ltd. the contractor handling Ohiya transmission power plant in Umuahia over the unavailability of the second transformer for the 2 x40 MVA 132/33Kv expected to transmit 64 megawatts of power supply.
The unavailability of the transformer hampered the functioning of the transmission plant and it could only power 32 megawatts.
Maku said the team would intimate the Minister of power on the development for appropriate action and to ensure that the contractor gets back to site. ¡°We are not happy that the contractor is not on site, and six months after the unveiling of the power sub-station, one of the transformersis still not working,¡± he said.
The minister also frowned at the tattered national flag mounted at the entrance of the site, describing it as an indication of un-patriotism and dereliction of management duty. ¡°This is unacceptable, Iam sure the National Orientation Agency has enough flags to go round the country, disciplinary action will be taken on this,¡± he added

• Target 10,000mw, 2300 jobs in Aba, others

• Manufacturing, training facilities for Calabar

NIGERIA Thursday recorded a milestone in her investment drive as the Federal Government and General Electric (GE) company of the United States (U.S.) sealed a $1billion (N158 billion) deal to boost the power sector in the next five years.

And the growing profile of Cross River State as a preferred investment destination was underlined with a plan to establish a manufacturing/assembly and training facilities in Calabar.

At a ceremony held at Transcorp Hilton Hotel in Abuja, Trade and Investment Minister, Olusegun Aganga, signed the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) on behalf of the Federal Government while the Global Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of GE, Mr. Jeff Immelt, led other top executives to endorse on behalf of the company.

Aganga explained that GE’s proposed investment in Nigeria was based on the country’s positive macro-economic indicators.

The new deal also takes care of additional investment in the service workshops in Port Harcourt and Onne in Rivers State.

The deal, which comprises $250 million capital expenditure and over $800 million incremental spending on local sourcing of goods and services, is expected to create 2,300 jobs and make Nigeria the regional hub for GE’s manufacturing, service and innovation in Africa. It will also support the company’s power generation, oil and gas production and exploration activities.

GE has also taken concrete steps to actualise its recent promise to work with Nigerian companies to build power plants to generate 10,000 megawatts of electricity in the country.

Also yesterday, the firm sealed a landmark agreement with Geometric Power Limited for the construction of a 450mw power plant in Aba, the commercial city of Abia State for $500 million.

The joint development agreement was sealed by top management of both firms in Abuja led by Immelt, and promoter of Geometric Power Limited and former Power Minister, Prof. Bart Nnaji.

Immelt said the investment was a demonstration of the company’s confidence in the Nigerian economy.

The company says it intends to provide one-year to four-year training programmes locally and internationally for repair engineers, welders, fabricators, machinists and special processing.”

The President and CEO of the company in the country, Lazarus Angbazo, assured that Nigerians would make up 90 per cent of the staff and management of the manufacturing facility.

Cross River State’s Acting Governor, Efiok Cobham, gave the commitment of the Calabar government in ensuring that the investment takes off as soon as possible.

He described GE’s decision to site the facilities in Calabar as a development that would be mutually beneficial.

On the Aba project, Immelt said: “By this agreement, GE is initiating a full realisation of its plan to develop with Nigerian companies up to 10,000mw of power in Nigeria. Both companies will bring their respective strengths to achieve synergy in reaching financial close for this project as quickly as possible. Under this agreement, the team will employ GE technologies in the full realisation of the project.”
