Pelé was a source of hope and confidence that they too could overcome their hardships. Journalist Joao Luiz de Albuquerque said of Pelé’s impact: “He was the light at the end of the tunnel. All the poor said, ‘hey, this guy made it, I can make it.’ He brought the rest of Brazil with him.” His inspirational display of football caused infectious joy in audiences of all ages but also caused even the teams over which he triumphed to share in his pleasure. However in 1967, he was able to do even more than that. During that year, Pele was flown to Lagos, Nigeria, then in the midst of the Biafran brutal civil war, to play an exhibition match. In order to allow both sides of the conflict to see the greatest ever player in the game, a 48-hour ceasefire was called and honored,

How touching. So Nigerians have something that unites them. Why not exploit this?

The game was played at the King George V Stadium (later known as Onikan Stadium). There are pictures of the match on the Nigerian Nostalgia 1960-1980 group on facebook and on the Cyber Eagles website.

My dad was there live smiley

Football. The spirit and power is the only unifying force among Nigerians. And some people still support Bon for not paying for the tv right. If Its jus to unite us only for the duration of the match me think Its worth it

Hm! There's someone here who's trying to correct me. He says that even though Pele (Santos of Brazil) played at the Onikan Stadium in Lagos, the match that led to the ceasefire was actually the match that was played in Benin.

Açcording to him, the Mid-West was neutral in the early stages of the civil war and David Ejoor got guarantees from Yakubu Gowon and Odumegwu Ojukwu that there would be no problems during the match. Ejoor also assured Santos that they would be safe and secure while in the Mid-West. The match was between Santos vs Mid-West 11.

They should have arranged a football match between the BIAFRAN REBELS and the FG TROOPS, this would have prevented the death of the millions that died....

Yes, they were rebels. The American War of Independence was the war between the Rebels vs The Red Coats.

The term rebel is not necessarily a bad term. It simply means that they are rebelling against the government/order of the day (I.e they don't want that government/country anymore).
