Yabatech Admits 4,500 Out Of 110,000 Candidates by Nobody: 5:20pm On Jan 29, 2013
The Rector, Yaba College of Technology, Lagos, Dr. Kudirat Ibiyeye-Ladipo, has expressed worries over inadequate admission space in tertiary institutions, saying the college was only able to admit 4,500 of the 110,000 candidates that applied to the college for the 2012/2013 academic session.

The rector, who said this while administering matriculation oath on the new students, also warned them against shunning lectures as any student that did not make 75 per cent of class attendance in a semester would not be allowed to sit for any examination in the college.

“At today’s ceremony, we will be matriculating new Higher National Diploma and National Diploma intakes in the region of 1,500 and 3,000 respectively. This is a far cry from the 110,000 candidates who applied to the college as more preferred institution,” she said.

But she added that in line with the Federal Government’s resolve to improve access to education, the college was making concerted efforts to improve its carrying capacity through the construction of more structures and institutionalisation of 18 new programmes.

Some of the structures, she said, include a 1,300-seater auditorium and another 500-seater lecture theatre project being upgraded to a three-storey building.

The rector, who emphasised the need for the students to attend classes regularly, also urged them to obey college rules and regulations, dress properly and demonstrate exemplary behaviour at all times.

The institution, she added, would not treat any student that violated rules and regulations with kid gloves as the college has zero tolerance for all forms of anti-social behaviour and indecent dressing.

Ibiyeye-Ladipo also called on the students to follow laid down procedures and effective channels of communication for making their grievances known.

She also appealed to them to remain focused and make a success of their stay in the college, hoping that they would work together in harmony with management to make the college better.

The rector, however, reminded the college populace that the ban on the sale of alcohol on campus and use of alcohol or any intoxicating substance by students on campus was still in force.
