The Nigeria Union of Teachers , NUT , on Monday said it would take a position on February 9 as regards state governments who have failed to implement the Teachers Salary Structure, TSS, by the end of January.

The Teachers’ Union president, Michael Alogba-Olukoya, said in a telephone interview in Lagos that the union is set to convene a National Executive Council, NEC meeting over the issue.

The union had in December 2012, warned states that had yet to implement the 27.5 per cent increase in allowances under the TSS, to do so before the end of January.

The union stance followed an August 2009 agreement with the governors’ forum on the implementation of the new salary structure.
Mr. Alogba-Olukoya said that at present, 18 states had yet to implement the agreement.

“We waited until January 31 to see if the implementation would reflect in their salaries but as we speak, from the collation we have done sofar, 10 of the 18 states have paid salaries without implementing it.

“We are waiting for the remaining eight to pay their own salaries too and by the time we are through with our collation, we shall convene an emergency NEC meeting on the way forward.

“I want to seize this opportunity to inform defaulting states that the struggle for the implementation of the TSS is still on and we will not relent until justice is attained,” he said.

Mr. Olukoya had on Friday listed the 18 affected states as Adamawa, Benue, Kogi, Lagos, Ekiti, Abia, Enugu, Cross River, Kebbi, Taraba, Plateau, Delta, Katsina, Nassarawa, Zamfara, Ebonyi, Gombe, and Bauchi

It is so shameful that Lagos state, with N40billion monthly revenue, is reluctant to pay the STIPENDS teachers earn as salary.

This is so so shameful and inexplicable.

Fixation of salary is one of the factors that poses threat to employer-employee relationship. So it's not an issue, it's a matter of negotiation and settlement. The issue is how to curb corruption and improvement in power supply, in which Gej has totally failed.

Not a new thing. Though, a delay in payment is definitely gonna make some home go on hunger mode, but they (teachers) ll be paid their entitlements.

Its not about me but about calling a spade a spade. The state govt cannot pay teachers the stipends they earn monthly but can pay Alpha Beta Ltd N9billion monthly.

If Anambra state, with monthly revenue of N3billion can afford to pay ALL teachers that stipend, how come Lagos, with monthly revenue of N40billion, cannot pay?

As far as I'm concerned the actions of Lagos state is atrocious, wicked, inhuman, devilish and inexplicable.
