African Voices, a permanent exhibition that examines the diversity, dynamism, and global influence of Africa’s peoples and cultures has profiled Dr Newton Jibunoh, a trailblazing explorer, environmentalist and historian who has dedicated his life to curbing the scourge of poverty caused by desertification.

Environmentalist Newton Jibunoh is one of Nigeria’s renowned explorers. He witnessed extreme drought and famine on solo expeditions across the Sahara desert and has been committed to finding solutions to desertification, a phenomenon where fertile land becomes desert. He has traveled the world to find solutions and set up a pilot project in the desert area of northern Nigeria.

Dr Jibunoh in an interview with Vladimir Duthier, CNN Nigeria Correspondent, recounts his experience on his expeditions across the Sahara desert and his efforts in curbing the scourge of poverty caused by desertification, a phenomenon where fertile land becomes desert. He has traveled the world to find solutions through his Fade Initiative (Fight Against Desert Encroachment) and also started a pilot project in the desert area of northern Nigeria outside Kano state.
