Finally, 148 yrs after the official abolition of slavery, the state of Mississippi ratifies the amendment. Mississippi has often been referred to as the last frontier in the civil rights movement. The state ratified the 14th ammendment to the US constitution which grants equal protection under the law to all citizens in 1870. Years after the ammendment had been adopted and after it had initially rejected the ammendment. However the state refused to adopt the 13th amendment which abolished slavery was adopted in 1865 but Mississippi refused to ratify it.
