A secessionist movement under the banner of Biafra Zionist Movement yesterday declared for formation of administration for the “Republic of Biafra,” naming some key federal government officials as part of its newly formed government based in Enugu.

Addressing members of the movement and journalists in Enugu, the president of the group, Chief Ben Onwuka, said the decision was taken to “free the Igbo race” from what he called the shackles of the Nigerian state, explaining that the Igbo have never been safe in Nigeria.

“Today being February 20, 2013, the Biafran people have now resolved to find the solution to our problem,” BBC Hausa quoted him as saying.

“All Nigerian military personnel stationed here in Biafra are hereby given two weeks to vacate our country,” Onwuka declared as he also ordered soldiers to remain in their barracks pending their evacuation out of the region.

The group announced the appointment of the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Chief Anyim Pius Anyim, as its President of the Senate. It also named Deputy Senate President, Senator Ike Ekweremadu, as Biafra’s ambassador to the United Nations.

Other officials named by Onwuka include Dr Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala as finance minister, MrsDizeani Alison-Madueke as Petroleum Minister, Mr. Orji Uzor Kalu as foreign minister and Sir Victor Umeh as Biafra’s ambassador to the United States.

Onwuka also announced the appointment of Mrs Arunma Oteh as the Governor of the Central Bank of Biafra. Other appointees, according to him, are former Anambra state governor, Mr Chris Ngige, as transport minister while former information minister, Prof. Dora Akunyili, is to serve as health minister.

The Chief of Army Staff (COAS), Lt General Azubuike Ihejirika, was appointed by the movement as Biafra’s Chief of Defence Staff.

Onwuka asked all the appointees for the new republic to indicate their acceptance of the posts in one week time. He however stated that none of them was contacted by the leadership of the movement before announcing the appointments.

Asked if he is not concerned that the Nigerian government may interpret his action as an act of felony, Onwuka explained that what his group did was within the confines of the law as the United Nations charter guarantees right to seek independence.

He cited the example of recent independenceof South Sudan from the old Republic of Sudan to buttress his claims.
