He mentioned his name was named after an hostel in UNN- read atop again!
visionbiafra: Great great. Nice piece. You 4got to mention that Alvan Hostel in the University of Nigeria was also named after him. wink Front page please, it's a way of celebrating our heroes and inspiring the young ones. It is far better than the Tiwa Savage, Omotola, Chike Ike bull crap that make the front page these days.

Iyaniwura is always on point.

Thanks for this informative write-up. I only knew the man as the name of a college of education and the head on the N10 note.

kay9: Good work, iyaniwura.

Its a little hard to believe that Nigeria had men like this. I mean, how did we ever get to this rotten state? Trying to imagine what naija was like in the '50s and '60s is almost like imagining paradise...

those time people then will not appreciate him because they knew more than what you guys know now.

same thing we are doing to some of our leader now.

Re: 20 Interesting Things About Alvan Ikoku by Oballer: 11:30am On Feb 23, 2013
you know that was the first thing i checked after reading the post....aimless . helpless. fruitless, uneducative, uninformative posts get as much as 13 pages of comment...we are not interested in our country's past so moving forward is sort of a big deal....well done iyaniwura...and thanks for making this a front page material...
henryskywalker2003: A very interesting and educative post and yet it's funny to see that it has just a few posts shy of 30. Had it been a post on Goldie, Kim K, and any other trash that fills nairaland front page nowadays, it would have generated pages of posts. Goes to show the kind of mentality we have in this country today. God help us all to fully achieve the vision our fathers had for this country when they fought for its independence.

godman01: Long piece but a great man indeed!
I guess yours would be way shorter.
Your complete unabridged biography on a page of a notepad is what I'm expecting

Wow!
What a story
What a man
What a rich impact-full life!
We need more of stories like this about our real heroes past, not these criminal politicians that call themselves Accidental Public thieves and craving national honors for ruining our collective common wealth.
This is so inspiring for us youths with a vision of greater Nigeria.
Thank you so much Iyaniwura for this research and delivery.
I think stories of all our great heroes like this should form the curricula for all GS classes in our higher institutions.
I don't understand why I should know so much about Benjamin Franklin's and Dale Carnegie's of this world, yet my home heroes are virtually unknown.

An interesting read, Iyaniwura. However, the correct name of his secondary school is Hope Waddell Training Institution not Institute. As an old boy, we take the pain to correct this error whenever we come across it and we took the pains to correct it even in wikipaedia some time ago. Thank you again for this piece.

I must say this is a great info of our national hero..(though personally m not into patriotism n politics lyk that).. however the life n times of this man is an interesting and inspiring one, I know of Awolowo, Azikwe, Ahmadu Bello, Herbert Macaulay etc (thanks to Social studies in primary school n personall reading) but I've seem to skip Alvan Ikoku, I only vaguely knew he was an educationist.. well thanks OP for this informative post.

I will like to note some things about the man: He had had SG Ikoku at the age of 22 (judging from d fact he was born 1900 and SG Ikoku was born 1922)and from what d OP posted he had an elder son! who was mentioned to b d former FVC of FUT. Abeokuta I'm like wow! so they had early marraige then or what!..well Alvan Ikoku came from a wealthy family tho.. so money no go eva be problem..unlike Awolowo that had a poor begining and even Azikwe that had to try a stowing-away to get to abroad(so I heard o).

Well this life of these people have been full of zeal for a change but reverse is what we find these days.. in fact the Ten Naira where his pix is is about to go into extinction, so is their values in Nigeria.. Only God's Kingdom can bring a change.

His Son, Late Prof. Chi Ikoku was the best Petroleum and Gas Engineer Africa ever produced.

His books in Petroleum Engineering are still widely used in American and Canadian Universities.

For your info, he designed the NLNG Bonny Process Trains and other notable Oil and Gas processes around the globe

Alvan's Daughter Inlaw, (Chi Ikoku's Wife) Late Dr. Mrs Ikoku was a renowned Accounting Lecturer also in the University of Port Harcourt. She passed on following an auto accident at the Abuja Airport road.

I also know Alvan's Grand Daughter (Chi Ikoku's Daughter) is a Design Engineer with Boeing, USA

@Op.,fantastic article. I learnt alot.

The coup of 1966 did incalculable damage to this country. Apart from leading to a civil war, it also wiped out the structures that produced the likes of the Great Alvan Ikoku

peleson: 1st privaTe school in Africa, education started in the east but the south south pioneered it. Likes of KING JAJA of OPOBO who sent his son PRINCE SUNDAY JAJA to study in royal college london alongside the royal house of Britain kids.
KiNG jAJA also had AMBASSADORS representing KINGDOM OPOBO in UK n other leading eauropean countries.
Chief Peterside was an ambassador to. Great Britain hence one of his great grand children became the First EYE MEDICAL DOCTOR in Nigeria and now Another came Atedor Peterside CEO of STANBIC IBTC bank n a reformer .
ALVAN was great!

South-south is an invention of yesterday. When King Jojo of Opu Obu sent his son, Prince Sunday Jojo, to study in royal college of London, Opu Obu was and still remains in the east.

I love it when great men are celebrated. Did anyone notice how almost all his children towed the path of Education and turned out to be good in their choosing field of study.

I say it again, NO NATION CAN RISE ABOVE THE QUALITY OF ITS TEACHERS. Nigerian government should go back to the drawing board and finance education heavily, providing Qualified Teachers with the incentives to teach and stocking the libraries and schools with quality and up to date education materials.
