Can a 6 months pregnancy be hidden? Was is not from their office dat she was eventually rushed to a private hospital for treatment and evacuation? And now they want d woman to go thru anoda examination to determine if she was really pregnant? Na wa o. Nigeria has lost all sense of reasoning indeed.

tayoccu: Discretion,
A quality our uniformed men lack.
A little discretion, on the path of the kai men and this unfortunate event would have been averted.
I hope they are duely punished.

no body is going to punish anybody. Wellcome to lagos.

Absolutely correct. Discretion is a critical quality required in the enforcement of many laws that govern petty offences (including traffic laws, restriction laws, etc.). The law was made for Man, not Man for the law. You don't ruin a person's life because he or she had reason to breach movement restriction laws, or drive on a one way road. Discretion MUST always apply in these matters. Even in advanced countries, law enforcement agents sometimes use their discretion to overlook petty offences depending on the situation.

Unfortunately, we have too many barely literate riff-raffs in most of our law enforcement agencies. That explains why, in their view, the laws (however wrongly interpreted) must be enforced at all costs - even if it means shooting you to death for not wearing an helmet on an Okada.

This story is rather a sad story and me think d lady needs 2 sue d agency 2 court. Kai is incorporated by miscreants and area boys but can we get reasonable and sound minds graduates precisely 2 do their work and earn 25k per month. Restructuring of d society comes at a price and this situation isn't an exception 2 both govt and people alike. Sure dis lady will smile @ d end of dis saga if redress is sought in a law court.

Probably because you just like a lot of Nigerians are mentally lazy. A lot of you guys want change,& yet you don't want to contribute. Always want to stay praying from morning till night without working or thinking of how to contribute to the country's growth & development.

The problem is that the average Nigerian is an illiterate - including the ones who claim to have gone to school - and also subscribe to a very backward way of thinking all in the name of adhering to culture. Even if one would like to contribute to the growth and development of the country Nigeria, the average Nigerian makes it difficult to do so. You have heard of the saying that "you can force the horse to the river bank but you cannot force the horse to drink the water".

If the average Nigerian is easily bought over with peanuts by their political, traditional and religious leaders and the elite, then there is nothing one can do about it. The only thing the average Nigerian is highly interested in is getting married and having a whole bunch of children that will join their parents and the Nigerian society in their misery, poverty and abject confusion.

Redoil: The Lagos State Office of Public Defender on Friday summoned officials of the Kick Against Indiscipline of the state’s Ministry of the Environment that allegedly detained a pregnant woman, causing her to lose a six-month-old pregnancy.

This is just as the government said it would wait for the outcome of OPD’s investigations to react to the incident and make its position clear.

PUNCH Metro had reported last Thursday that Nkechi Omakagu lost her six-month-old pregnancy after being detained by KAI officials for violating the law which restricts movement during the compulsory environmental sanitation exercise on the last Saturdays of every month.

Omakagu, who said she was arrested while being rushed to Jolad Hospital, Gbagada, following complications related to her pregnancy, said she spent eight hours in KAI custody.

Our correspondent learnt that following a petition addressed to the state Attorney General’s Office, the OPD, a department under the Ministry of Justice, took up the case and all parties were invited.

A source, who was at the meeting, told our correspondent on the telephone that the KAI officials said they were not aware that Omakagu was pregnant and thought that she was pretending about her medical condition.

The source said, “When we met with OPD, the KAI officials, who had detained Nkechi (Omakagu), denied that she was pregnant and said even if she was, they did not know. The KAI men said they refused to let her go because whenever they arrested people on environmental sanitation day, there was always an excuse.”

It was learnt that due to KAI official’s claim, the OPD said it would be necessary for Omakagu to undergo a medical examination at a public hospital to determine if she was actually pregnant at the time she was arrested.

The source said, “She (Omakagu) had received treatment at a private hospital where she was also diagnosed with having premature contractions. It was also the hospital that evacuated the dead foetus from her womb. So what we were told was that for the sake of objectivity, a public hospital would need to carry out independent medical examination.

“It was said that based on the outcome of the medical examination at the public hospital, the government would be advised so it could determine the next line of action.”

The Director OPD, Omotola Rotimi, however, said she had not been briefed on the matter. But a senior employee at the agency confirmed the incident to our correspondent on the telephone.

She said, “We want to establish if the lady’s pregnancy loss was caused by KAI’s detention or something else. Also, we want our doctors at the Lagos State University Teaching Hospital to give us their own report for the sake of objectivity.

“If it is established that the victim lost her pregnancy due to the detention, then the KAI officials will be prosecuted.”

in a sanner society pregnant women are exempted from certain rules e.g they can urinate on the toes of a serving governor or president and go free especially in country like england and usa that you people love to compare nigeria with.
What is USA? What is England? I'm Nigerian & what concerns me is Nigeria. What's my f'n business with what happens in USA or England? If you're pregnant,so you should break the law? Did you read the post at all? Did you not see where they said they didn't know she was pregnant? Whatever it is,the law should stand firm. If it is also found out that the KAI officials were guilty of any unlawful act,let them be punished. The law should take its right course by standing neutral & prosecuting whichever side is guilty rather than basing on sentiments, pregnant woman or not.

As it stands, Lagos is gradually becoming an All Man To Yourself State. It's no surprise that numerous atrocities are recurrently being commited in the 'MegaCity' by the overzealous law offencement agents. Equally interesting is the fact many will rather publicly deny these things happen than condemn and fight these attrocities. Only time will tell.

Bro, I totally agree with you. A 100%! However, I'm of the belief that people should be good because that's the right thing to do as opposed to being good because you want to fit into the society & be seen as cool. Even if most Nigerians like you rightly said are goats,if you see the wrong things being done everywhere & you alone has to do the right thing, PLEASE DO IT. CHANGE STARTS FROM SOMEONE,IT STARTS FROM SOMEWHERE. IT MIGHT BE SLOW,BUT IT KEEPS GROWING IN A CHAIN.

Of course my dear, there should be medical exceptions. No doubt about that. But what you guys fail to understand is that the woman was not in labour. She's just 6 months pregnant. They probably first broke the law,& then after they were apprehended they just used the pregnant woman as an excuse they thought could have rescued them. At the end of the day, they paid a great consequence for being undisciplined.

Truth be told? Pregnancy is a medical condition. If this occurred in a developed nation, she either would've been left to continue to the hospital, or police may have escorted her. It's not every day that a speeding driver who is pulled over gets a ticket. Trust me, I'm speaking from experience. As others have mentioned, discretion.[/size]

If dey are charged for murder, what about the 4 students murdered for daring to protest against non availability of water in their school & hostel accomodation? The right to live & to freely express yourself in nigeria have, been shove in the ass our political leaders and their armed security forces.
