MEMBERS of the House of Representatives Tuesday mandated the committees on Internal Security and Police Affairs to investigate the killing of four University of Nasarawa students by soldiers.

The House also killed a motion on the need to further investigate judges Charle Archibong and Thomas Naron for alleged legal misconduct.
This was sequel to a motion brought to the floor of the House by Hon Kingsley Chinda, PDP, Rivers state under matters of national importance.
Chinda who led the debate had argued that “the recent killing of some Nasarawa University students by soldiers on February 25 who embarked on a peaceful protest for lack of water and electricity was very uncivil.

He said, “the deployment of soldiers or policemen armed with live ammunition to university campuses in the guise of quelling students protests is clearly wrong and unacceptable. ”
“The present case is one too many in cases of extra-judicial killings by men of the police and the armed forces that dailytake place in university campuses and several parts of the country against defenceless innocent students and citizens is very condemnable. ”

Chinda explained further that”the incident has led to very serious tension within the university community and its environ as so many were reported to havedeserted thier homes for fear of further attacks by man of t’he Nigerian Army and/or reprisal attack by the students. ”
”The situation is already generating ill feelings and bad blood between the university students and men of the Nigerian Army and if not immediately checked could lead to further escalation of violence in the area and the area could be completely cut off from other parts of Nasarawa. ”
Hon Aminu Tambuwal who presided at this juncture called for a vote voice and it was unanimously adopted.
Both committees on Security and Police Affairs are expected to submit their reports within two weeks to the House. .

But a similar attempt by Hon Kingsley Chinda to also sponsor a motion on the need to further investigate Judges Naron and Achibong met a brickwall as members of the House unanimously killedit.
Chinda had argued that “both judges should be made to face other law enforcement agencies and get stiffer penalties. ”
Most members however thought otherwise and when Tambuwal did put it to a voice vote the nays overwhelmed the House.

I repeat that those that invited the soldiers should b held responsible. I still believe that the soldiers acted based on the instructions and report given 2 them. Though they are supposed 2 observe the situation b4 any action.

Did these guys really murder protesting students? We need to start jailing people who shoot unarmed protesters in this country. Why send soldiers against unarmed students?

Is it that we don't have anti-riot policemen in this country or what?

I dont tnk soldiers ar to blame here but those wu called them to action! wen a soldier slaps u, naturaly u ar to die frm dat slap, no nation wil train her soldiers to shoot to maim, but shoot to die is the norm fo an efficient soldier! that s why soldiers ar normally kept far frm the civil populace.
