A yoruba proverb says "Igba ara la n bura". They lived their lives in their own time and enjoyed it the way they understand and we cannot compare our time with theirs because everything has changed and there's no basis for comparison. We can only enjoy our own time while the unborn generations will enjoy theirs also. However,I suggest we live our lives with eternity in focus because that's where the real enjoyment lies

deols: By what are we measuring happiness?

if they thought they were happier than how we think we are happy then, yes, they were.

and if they thought they were happy at a significantly more number of times than we have these thoughts, again, they were happier.

and vice versa

I wont for any reason wish to live at their time. The thoughts of what the sanitation was like, the rituals, child marriages, too large families etc come to mind. It doesnt change the fact that I may have been happy as the youngest of 13 wives grin marrying the man with the largest farm grin
Their sanitation was 1000 times better than your sanitation today.

Everybody gotta admit that we live in a dog eat dog world filled with competition and bragado on the latest purchases

Our forebearers were happier because they were not driven by sheer greed.

The king of the jungle (the Lion) does not hunt more than it can eat at a sitting in sharp contrast to Man who wants to acquire billions he can't finish in a life time even if it means millions of his compatriots will starve to death.

Even after getting these billions, it still does not satisfy the soul of the money grabbing man/woman and still feeling insecure he/she craves for more money and acquisitions to satisfy a void in his/her spirit.

Our forebearers were not this greedy and had more individual peace of mind.

Particularly in Nigeria, where Capitalism with an unhealthy sprinkling of Corruption and Greed now means it is not even "Dog eat Dog" but "Snake eat Snake". Its like our leaders have so stolen us blind that the 170 million masses are coiled up like snakes looking up at the table for crumbs that fall from the Lootocrats table and these masses are striking themselves like snakes just to eat from the crumbs from the tables of the greedy leaders who have held them captive by the jugular.

In the process the masses who should be on one anothers side since they have suffering in common are ready to even steal from themselves and you now see Husband and Wife, Brother and Sister, Parent and Child, Inlaws and Outlaws competing to be richer than one another and out goes genuine love and in comes phony pretentions and outright treachery even between Husband and Wife.

Ndipe:
live in modest thatch roof homes, and at evenings, gather at the village square to regale one another with folk talks under moonlight.

We dare not incorporate that into our lives for fear of being left behind or worse, being ridiculed by our mates as being crass

The biggest deliverance is not spiritual deliverance but deliverance from other peoples opinion because these so called mates deep down are your mates only because you are doing well at the moment. Let your fortunes change and you will see friends and family for what they really are.

Finally comes the Shame vs Shamelessness culture

In days gone by, our forebearers had shame and respected their family names whilst todays generation are utterly shameless and people are now ready to "in the name of civilisation and being cool" send photos of their private parts to other people by phone and post same on the internet for generations born and yet to be born to see. And this is supposed to be normal.

This "modern" epidemic of online pornography is such a ticking time bomb that the largest viewers of online porn are kids aged 12 to 17 because it is an uncensored free for all and when you factor in the wilful carelessness of some parents who don't monitor their childrens internet access, the recipe for disaster is fully cooked.

It brings to mind the case of a 14 year old girl raped by boys the same age who were obsessed by online porn and on psychological evaluation, one of the boys said he participated because he was addicted to online porn and wanted to practice what he had watched online. http://www.dailymail.co.uk/debate/article-2286264/A-14-year-old-raped-boys-age-obsessed-online-porn-Welcome-nightmare-I-ve-warned-years.html

The filth on the "unregulated" internet is daily damaging what values society once held dear. There is no longer "wide eyed" innocence in the world and it can only get worse because this "liberal" world and its lawmakers will continue to damage all that was good in society in the name of modernisation.

Our forebearers lives was a more wholesome affair than ours and they also had a conscience whilst we have lost ours or worse still, ours is seared with hot iron.

They had to be less happy - we forget how many medical diseases we dont need to fight anymore. Some of these were painful, lingering conditions. Still though, happiness is a state of the mind, and its easier to be happy when you care about fewer things

Ever thought that the backwardness comes from YOUR conceptualisation of morality?

What is moral about restricting people's impulses? You need to stop thinking everyone necessarily shares your judaeo-christian or other religious tenets and creeds which lead you to think that sex is inherently evil. Maybe society IS moving forward by freeing itself from the moral dictates of a small, control freak minority of which you are a part?

Do you mean all human impulses should be allowed to be freely acted upon?

I humbly beg to differ. Our forefathers were definitely not happier. Unless you count slavery and fighting unending tribal battles as means to happiness. Our forefathers did the unthinkable. They sold their sons and daughters into slavery. They fought so many unreasonable wars, killed each other in reckless abandon. They carried the vanquished caught at the battle field into the slavery. They sold their own kind to the white man who came from a very distant land. Those they could not sell they branded outcast, or sacrificed to some deity. Life expectancy in that generation was very low. Most of them died young. Children were thrown alive into the evil forest for having protruding bellies. Women who gave birth to twins risked being lynched, the twin babies were killed. They lacked the vision and innovation to find cures to ailments that decimated the population. They were lazy. Whatever they could not find answers to, they branded an omen from the supernatural. They laid the foundation to the most backward race. That is an indisputable fact in today's world.

Sam Milla:

You may now shut up. Those women were a lot happier than your mother and you combined together.
They have everything they needed. Now you don't have everything you need, do you? what happened?

There were a lot of respect for men because they hustled for the food, money and security.
Men of nowadays do the same but what do they get? A gold digger for a wife who knows some girl in America called Kim Kardasian who wears PRADA, Drives Bentley, dances naked and makes money.
Our mothers of then had handworks, they farm, fetches water with babies tied to their backs and tell moonlight stories.
You and your fellow girls of nowadays don't farm, you dont fetch water, you have no stories to tell.

Can't you state your point without mentioning me or my motHer?Being the man of the house is only for your wife not me,so don't speak like a buffoon. You can catapult yourself back to the stone age you want to be and Bleep off NL land because an ancient ape don't have any business here.Aww sorry,I got all that matters to me,what has your happy mum got??Tubers of yam??

I suppose your mother has stories to tell, stories of farming and fetching waterI guess that includes watching your father bleep his concubines in her presence, right??Guy you are deluded!!!So your mother told you she was happy huh??I hope all you sisters will get married to one hunter or wine tapper in your Villa so they will be happy like your mum and have stories of farm lands and fire wood fetching to tell.Sorry,we talk real jobs now Mr,nursing,pharmacists,accountants,grammarians,doctors....e.t.C.

Well if you married a gold digger,I think that serves you right because a man that runs his mouth like diahhear can't be settled to find a wife.My hubby is well appreciated, loved and cared for,he doesn't whine like you because he married MUA!!!wife material lol!!.Your bullcrap gist about Kim K and co sounds like a broken record.

Now Mr,You can bleeping shut the F**K up up!!!!!!and remember to shut only your unappreciative wife up because you are no man to shut me up.

Oh gosh!!!I love the new generation women,we get to bruise the egos of insecure men like you,I can spit on your face if I like (spits on him),see?no consequences. Now go deal with your modern unappreciative wife or better still f**k off this generation.

Phewww!!!Off to scratch my hubby's back **winks**.

I prefer listening to folk talkes under the moonlight to watching fairytales on disney channels. The flow of the story is very vivid and almost transports you to the real action of the tale, similar to watching them on television. Unfortunately our values are being watered down by the western culture. Miss it very much. Moreso, there is always a moral to the story it imparts to the listeners. Which disney movie does that?
