rotas: Reprom co.nig ltd is making history. Ajaokuta steel is back again.d ukranians are on ground now.work is going on now on d thermal plant to generate power.we should expect wire rods n steel bar coming out in weeks to come.

@rotas,
*Do you work or live near Ajaokuta plant/facility? How are you aware of the work being carried out?
*Has the dispute concerning the Indians who were alleged to run the plant aground been resolved?
*The Chinese showed interest in resuscitating the plant/facilty during FG's recent visit to China, and I think MoUs were signed... What happened to this effect?

Kindly throw more light on the above... Thanks #I'm just excited about the news, and will be pretty happy if FG is able to facilitate production/generation from Ajaokuta plant.

What he's saying is very true. In fact the whole Ajaokuta area is a beehive of activity, with everyone getting in on the act, from service companies to restaurants, taxis, shops etc. The place is buzzing seriously. The Jonathan govt does not make too much noise. In fact they don't even want to publicize their work too much so that some nefarious elements don't go and sabotage it for them. This is why not many Nigerians realize that ALL our refineries are functioning at over 65% capacity as we speak. Many think they're all moribund. cool

25th February 1980 - ITN News
PRESIDENT SHAGARI VISITS AJAOKUTA STEEL PROJECT -- PART OF A NEW INDUSTRY THAT WILL HELP THE COUNTRY PRODUCE IT'S OWN STEEL BEFORE 1983.

The Nigerian steel Development Minister Paul Unongo announced recently that Nigeria will start producing its own steel before 1983. President Alhaji Shehu Shagari visited one of the most important sites of the growing Nigerian steel industry a few days before the announcement. The Ajaokuta Steel Plant is one of the many projects aimed at speeding up the industrialisation of Nigeria. The President said the success of projects like it would result in what he called an increased tempo in the country's economic growth.

SYNOPSIS: Ajaokuta was chosen as the site of the Plant in 1974. But the planning of an iron and steel industry in Nigeria dates back to the late fifties. Various foreign firms have acted as consultants to the federal government's Steel Development Ministry. And President Shagari himself has been a champion of the growing industry.

It is federal government policy that the development of the steel industry will be the foundation of Nigeria's growing technology and industrialisation. The demand for steel in Nigeria has been increasing over the years and so far, the country has relied entirely on it's import.

It will be children like this one who will most benefit from the current construction at Ajaokuta. Not only will the industry provide jobs, but the President himself pointed out the auxiliary industries will grow up offering even more employment for young Nigerians.

Buhari took over from Shagari because Nigeria was bankrupt.

Buhari was only in power for 20 months, and with his rejection of the ruinous terms for IMF loans it was not possible at that time to revive the steel plant.

You should be asking what did IBB and Obasanjo do with their 8 years continuous reigns to revive the plant? Especially Obasanjo who was enjoying record high oil prices during his 8years tenure.

This is why I like to see people like Jonathan in power. Educated people. Technocrats who understand economics and geopolitics. This is what you need to build a modern country. Characters like Buhari are just conservative elements with very little by way of a forward-looking agenda. I've never seen Buhari come out with any fresh economic proposals or roadmap, or seen anything suggesting he even thinks about development.

The stream of thought that gave rise to the concept of Ajaokuta plant or project was adulterated by the spirit of tribal and sectional politics hence the project or plant has become a painted sepulcher. I do not know the grades of steels expected out of the plant in Ajoakuta but it is clearly a project without a prioritized end.

The resources lavished on the so-called Ajaokuta would have given Nigeria, at least, two or three manageable smaller plants with prioritized end products in mind. In such settings, the product of one plant will or will not feed the process of end product of another plant.

In a nutshell, the Ajaokuta plant is a borderline waste.

Since you know and bothered to know about the grades of steel out of Ajaokuta plant, it is humanly wise that you inform us. As a person, I am in position to talk about the past, present, or future prospects of the Ajaokuta facility especially the failed parts or life. He may be an astute economic manager, a bit like a "safe hands" caretaker, but he's really not your man if you are looking to create a dynamic, technology and ideas-driven economy that's investment friendly and looking to long-term development. Was it not Buhari that cancelled the Lagos metro line in the 80s for some frivolous reasons? That's not the act of a dynamic leader.

Do you people realize that 5,000 Nigerians are currently working in the Ajaokuta Steel Plant as we speak?

A full-scale INDUSTRIAL REVOLUTION is germinating right before our very eyes.

5,000 Nigerians working in Ajaokuta Steel Plant

Reprom Nigeria Ltd, a firm currently engaged for the reactivation of the thermal power plant and one of the rolling mills of Ajaokuta Steel Company in Kogi State, said it has engaged 5,000 Nigerians.

WorldStage Newsonline

In a statement, the company’s managing director, Mr Attah Achimugu said the workforce comprises Nigerians from various parts of the country.

Mr Achimugu assured that more Nigerians would be employed as the company’s expansion programme continues. wink

Reprom Nigeria Ltd is in partnership with Ukrainian National Foreign Corporation [UNFEC] whose delegation visited Nigeria last month with a pledge of serious and fruitful partnership with Reprom to complete the steel plant as a matter of urgency.

Significantly the company’s experts on ground have virtually finished the reactivation of the rolling mills, and are only awaiting special rubber seals to finish work on the rolling stands. After this the stands will be reinstalled back to the rolling lines, set, fine tuned and idle furnace to be lighted for production operation to commence.

Mr Achimugu also added that all equipment for the reactivation of the thermal power plant have been cleared at the ports and received at the steel plant.

According to him, “the company is only awaiting the complete delivery of turbine and transfer oils to be completed next week. This will be coming on the heels of the expected technical that will commence the reactivation of the thermal plant also next week.”

What did man of courage IBB do?

Did he not use Ajaokuta as a cover to loot several billion dollars?

It is unfair to say Buhari did nothing, he was in power for only 20months and given that the country was bankrupt when he came to power how do you expect him to fund the project given that he had quite rightly reject ruinous OMG loan terms
