Obi Insists On Apga’s Congresses, National Convention Against Inec’s Stand by Slizbeat(m): 6:10pm On Mar 11, 2013
ONITSHA — Ahead of the appeal filed by ousted national chairman of All Progressive Grand Alliance, Chief Victor Umeh contesting his sack by Enugu High Court, the Governor Peter Obi-led faction of the party, Saturday, in Awka, resolved to conduct ward, local government and state congresses and convene national convention to elect a new national chairman on April 30.

Enugu High Court recently sacked Umeh on account that the national convention that returned him as national chairman by voice vote at a convention held in Awka was illegal.
This is coming on the heels of a pronouncement by the Independent NationalElectoral Commission, INEC, that Governor Peter Obi of Anambra State had no constitutional powers, as entrenched in APGA constitution, to conduct ward, local government and state congresses as well as national convention.

According to INEC, it is only the national chairman that has the power to carry out such an exercise.
But rising from a crucial meeting of the South East and South South geo- political zones, leaders and stakeholders of the party said the decision to hold the congresses and convention next month was to enable APGA prepare and replace an APGA governor at Awka Government House in the scheduled November 16, 2013 governorship election.

Speaking on the occasion, chairman of the APGA Stakeholders’ Forum, Chief Sylvester Nwobu-Alor, urged the interim national leadership of the party, led by Mr. Maxi Okwu, to accommodate all aggrieved members in the on-going restructuring and reorganisation of the party.
”APGA is an Igbo umbrella party. We should bring everybody on board. I advise you to disregard media reports that Chief Victor Umeh has gone on appeal over the Enugu High Court judgment that sacked him.”
“You should also disregard statements by some disgruntled elements who are not evenmembers of the party,” he said.

Where does INEC derive its power to meddle in the internal affairs of political parties?
