Sacking Of NCAA DG By The President, Right Or Wrong Move? by Camilia247: 12:09pm On Mar 12, 2013
Yesterday evening the media was replete with the news concerning the sack of DG NCAA, Harold Demuren by the President. Now one cannot but ponder, why did the President decide to sack him now, why didnt GEJ sack him when DANA air crashed? or was the president waiting for investigation report to ascertain the role or negligence of the DG in the aviation sector? Should we expect more sacking especially where obvious official lapses are noticed (someone whispered the Nigerian Police), i dnt know o?

But in all, is the sacking of the DG of NCAA a right or wrong move? looking at the aviation sector critically

i wouldnt know if it is a good or wrong move owing to the fact that the minister is still sitting tight in office, the aviation sector needs complete over hauling and not just the sacking of one, over the past one year there've been alot of negligence in the path of aviation management staff starting frm the Minister down to the casual workers, and these lapses were so obvious that most times when you are in any of the Nigerian airports, one can't help but shake his head in pity and shame...just somedays ago, the was no light in abj airport, when the could have provided alternative measures while trying to do woteva upgrade the said the were carrying out...that shows a high level of incompetence on the side of the management..

Sacking the DG at least shows that the President takes time to look into these issues, but timing matters, wot needs to be done, needs to be done fast, somehow it is good o, but the Minister should go too.

Also, Someone should plz advise the President that our Police needs similar overhauling, take away dis tired lads and let vibrant, agile officers handled affairs, anyway i dnt want to say much abt dat.

We can continue to debate the right or wrong of the sack or we can move on. The guy has done his bit and it's time for him to face other challenges. If he was competent, he would have groomed other people to comtinue his legacy, and would have institutionalized some of the processes that are critical to better management of the NCAA judging from the years he spent in the industry. If he did do any of those, then he is not good enough, and no one should shed any tears for him.

Finally let's hope a better man/woman is appointed to replace him.

the Long awaited sack finally here...these pple just run this country like their own property, with lackadaisical approach to everything and sometimes the president falls into this too...pple need to take issues of national interest with so much seriously...anyway it is a good one but the beam light should also be pointed towards other agencies and Ministries

IMHO, Madam minister should be sacked, not Demuren

Don't be daft. There is NO conclusion from the inquest into the Dana Air crash. The investigation is still underway. There is ZERO indication that Demuren has any blame in the Dana Air crash. There is NO evidence of any negligence on his part. Where are the 'obvious' official lapses on his part?

See the caliber of professional that GEJ sacked!

http://chxta..co.uk/

In 1976, a bright 31 year old who had just finished writing his Doctoral Thesis on the Aerodynamic Design, Manufacturing and Testing of turbine blades at MIT forsook offers to work for the US Navy and Air Force, and accepted to come home to Nigeria. It must be stated that this same chap, prior to going to the United States, had obtained a Masters at the Kiev Institute of Aviation Engineers. It must also be stated that the Ruskies were not too happy to let him go o'er to the Yanks when he decided to do his PhD. He had been in the USSR from 1965 until 1972.
That chappie returned to Nigeria in '76 and joined our Aviation Ministry and rose like a star through the ranks. He was seconded as a deputy director to the newly created Federal Civil Aviation Authority in 1990, then forced to retire because of his refusal to make compromises on safety when the Abacha regime found it prudent to "restructure" the aviation sector.
After retirement, he found Afrijet Airlines which specialised in cargo operations. In 2005, he was recalled to national service and was appointed to a five year term as the DG of his former establishment, now renamed the NCAA. During his tenure as the NCAA helmsman our air safety record improved tremendously such that Nigeria was granted a US FAA Category One Certification in 2010. In other words, he is the reason y'all can hop on a plane to go to the US directly rather than the costly and tortuous route of going elsewhere first.
Under his watch, Nigeria has successfully completed no less than EIGHT international safety audits. He was fired yesterday by the Prez because of his "unsatisfactory response to the numerous concerns of stakeholders in the aviation sector". It will be too much to expect an explanation of what the "unsatisfactory response" is of course.

Last year, in the aftermath of the Dana air disaster, Dr. Demuren made what I personally consider his only faux pas as the head of the NCAA when he declared that all the passengers had perished, less than an hour after the plane went down. That aside, his record was so spectacular, than in the knee jerk that followed Dana, when people called for his sack, assorted officials declared that there was no replacement for him.

Another harebrained decision from GEJ.

i dnt no who is daft here, frm my statement i didnt say they had concluded inquest or woteva, i only asked a question? "was he waiting...amongst other questions...doesnt imply that there hav concluded it, ok? just say it was a right or wrong move.

I believe it was a wrong decision, I had a sort of professional cum personal experience with him, a client of mine got a contract to install a Satellite link for the NCAA office close to the international airport, this was during the US certification process, the guy who got it dilly dallied on the project and Demuren did not waste time to cancel the contract, also, he did not pay a dime though the guy provided an alternative and had spent a lot on the project.

but is sacking the solution to Nig's prob? if i can remember vividly, the minister of power was sacked, as that brought abt any improvement in the power sector

Sacking may not necessarily be the solution, first govt must avoid getting to that stage of sacking by identifying the right persons for certain appointments, cos if the right pple with prior knowledge of the office they will occupy are appointed, there will be no need for sacking on the long run...appointment shudnt be use for political settlement cos this is where the prob lies
