BENIN—A middle-age woman alleged to have been serially raped by four men while in police custody in Abraka, Delta State, has petitioned the Assistant Inspector General of Police, Zone 5, Benin, accusing the Divisional Police Officer, DPO, and his men of negligence and failure to protect her.

In the petition by counsel to the woman, Mr. Ejomasuvwe Efe, alleged that following a fight between her and her neighbour, police from Abraka Police Station came to arrest her following a complaint from one Mama Afoke who she had altercation with.

She disclosed that efforts made by her husband to effect her bail was rebuffed by the DPO and DCO, who apart from intimidating and abusing her husband pushed him out of the police station.

She said: “Shortly after Mr. Isaiah left the Abraka Police Station, the Police IPO instructed the Police man at the counter to take his wife to the police cell and delivered her into a cell where there were already two men.

“As soon as the Police locked the gate to the cell, two young boys came into the cell where the woman and the other two mature men were kept, and immediately they started touching her indecently despite her protests that she was a married woman and mother of five children.

“The boys asked her to keep quiet and immediately grabbed her by her neck and gagged her with their hands while the others held her two hands and threw her violently on the floor and started to rape her.

“In the process, she started shouting but the policemen refused to come to her aid until she went into a coma. She only came around the following morning”.

She added that when she became conscious, she noticed that her husband was inside the cell opposite where she was held, adding that when asked him what he was doing there, her husband replied that when he came that morning to effect her bail, the police pushed him into the cell for ever asking for her bail.

Mrs. Isaiah informed the AIG that when her husband confronted the DPO and DCO about his wife’s allegedly raped and kept in the same cell with men, the DCO ordered that he should be kept behind the counter.

While saying that she was later taken to the Abraka Government hospital where a doctor who treated her confirmed that she was raped, alleged that the IPO begged her not to tell people about the doctor’s verdict.

“After our client was discharged from the hospital, one Mr. Kobina Enamuotor who is the father of one of the rapist, Akpevwe and one Mr. Okotie whose son was also involved in the rape, together with the woman IPO and two other police men went to the family of our client begging for settlement and they offered to pay damages of N120,000 to the family.

“Meanwhile, the DPO of Abraka Police Station seeing the seriousness of the offence and the negligence of himself and his men, refused to take any meaningful action and wanting to cover it up, before well wishers started protesting and sending text messages to the Commissioner of Police which led to the transfer of the case to Asaba”, the petitioner said.

She alleged that in Asaba the IPO who was detailed to handle the case started to intimidate her husband, threatening him that if they did not hands off the case, some thing more dangerous will happen to them since the Assistant Commissioner of Police in Asaba was interested in the case and was ready to deal ruthlessly with them.

“Our clients are in a serious trauma and cry for justice with firm instruction to demand and we hereby demand that the AIG should use hid good offices and detail well spirited policemen from his office in Benin to carry out discrete investigation into this heinous crime at the Abraka police Station, Mama Afoke and the rapists involved brought to book

Please this should not be swept under the carpet. I am sure there are a thousand and one of this kind of thing that never gets reported. The IG for God's sake should use this as an opportunity to further flush out some evil policemen at Abraka and any conniving officer at Asaba. What a shame!!! shocked

When i was on vacation in Nigeria, I visited CPS police station Onitsha in may 2011, to affect the release of a relative. when i went close to the cell, i was attracted by cries and wailing of three teenage girls between the ages of 13 to 17 in the cell with about 8 hefty male criminal suspect. when the girls saw me the started shouting that they are innocent. i sort for the IPO who happens to be one useless Jezebel in her twenties. when i asked her while the girls are in the cell with the male suspect, she lied to me that they were arrested for aiding kidnappers, i insisted that i am interested in their case because the girls told me that they did nothing except fighting with their landlady who was beating one of them. she said okay I should pay 30000 if i want the girls to be free. i asked her if bail is no longer free and to my greatest surprise all of the police officers in the counter started laughing at me including their superiors. beside us was the mother and guardian of the girls who is a widow and hawks pure water with the girls for survival. she told me that she borrowed 10000 from their village meeting and had being pleading with the IPO since morning to release the girls. she told me that the girl fought with their landlady when she was beating one of them because their compound was messed up with water due to leakage from their pure water bags they were hawking and the landlord bribed the police officers to detain the girls in the cell and the police officers dumped them in the male cells and instruct the male suspects to beat them up.I was surprised again when the IPO later collected 15000 from the widow to release the girls later in the night. The problem with Nigerian police force is simply wickedness and demonic. they don't have human heart esp the ones in Anambra state. it is even hard to differentiate between a criminal and a police man in Nigeria. they are the same

o gosh! Smh this is very sad.whenever i see police men or groups of police men in nigeria i cringe with disgust infact,i prefer passing another place.they irritate the living day light out of me.your story reminds me of a day my atm got lost and i was asked by my bank to get a police report and swear an affidavit before they can issue another one to me.when i told my friend she advised me not to go to the police station alone because this police men are animalistic.i reasoned with her and so i went with her boyfriend and 2 of my friends.when we got there, those at the counter were so bad looking and very shabby.they said i should pay 2,ooo naira to get a police report or get lost.i paid and waited for it to be typed.while waiting, the foul odour that was comming out of the cell and those in the cell made me cringe with fear.anyway i got it and left there.those in the cell were teenage boys who the police men claimed stole phones.but in all,i have no iota of respect for nigerian police.if they have the opportunity sef they can rape their mother and grand mother.they have no single regard for women anyway after my youth service i went on vacation with my mom and her sisters to the uk,i was so shocked and amazed at the level of civility, decency and politeness of those cops.they are so neat and are beautiful people.if you see them sef,you will want to join the cops or pray for your kid to be a police man.the police force is one of the most noble professions outside nigeria,in civilized nations o,but not in nigeria.they look like frustrated and pathetic souls that their frustration sef can make you cringe with fear. Our dog cage sef is even cleaner than many police stations in nigeria

I've said it before and I'll say it again: the majority of Nigerian police officers are satanic!
