The Republic of Korea (South Korea), on Friday, called for Nigeria’s assistance to broker peace between it and the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea (North Korea).

[b]Mr Chung Eui-Yong, Special Envoy from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade, Republic of Korea, made the call when he visited the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Olugbenga Ashiru, in Abuja.

Eui-Yong said that Nigeria’s relations with both North and South Korea would be of benefit to the promotion of peace between both countries.

"Nigeria is one of the few countries in the world that maintains good relations with both the North and South of the Korean Peninsula," he said. "We believe that the Government of Nigeria would take advantage of the good relations to persuade our brothers and sisters in North Korea to come out of its self-inflicted isolation and embrace peace.

The minister has special experience with our brothers and sisters in North Korea and we hope we can rely on your good offices to reconcile us and find a way to establish peace in our part of the world."

The envoy said that South Korea was willing to engage North Korea in dialogue and deepen its cooperation with the country to enhance peace.

"We are ready to reconcile our differences peacefully; we are very concerned about their recent actions including the testing of nuclear weapons," he said. "We hope they will stop this provocation and come to the table; we are willing to talk and provide humanitarian assistance for them."[/b]

In his response, Ashiru said that Nigeria did not support the acts of threat from North Korea, adding that it would spare no efforts in ensuring peace between North and South Korea.

"We will continue to use our good offices and relations with them to tell them that they have to sit down with their brothers from the South and talk," he said. "We do not support any belligerency on their part; we do not support North Korea threatening South Korea or the United States in any way.

We believe that the issues that are causing this tension could be resolved peacefully. They need assistance from the South and from the U.S. and they must come down and talk with their brothers; there is no reason for any situation to cause tension in that peninsular. We want to see a peaceful Korean Peninsula and Nigeria would spare no efforts to assist in whatever way we can, to bring both countries to talk until peace is achieved."

Ashiru also urged South Korea to invest in key sectors of the Nigerian economy as such would strengthen economic relations between both countries.

Earlier, both parties had held closed-door discussions to work out areas in which they could enhance bilateral relations, and agreed to enhance political, economic and cultural relations
