Many people have urged Gen. Gowon to write his memoir.Mounting such pressure on him is an exercise in futility because there are five key issues, which he will never be able to explain convincingly to all Nigerians. So he prefers to avoid talking about them. The first is the Aburi Accord. How on earth can Gowon justify dumping an agreement he signed freely in a foreign country, surrounded by a crowd of advisers and technocrats?

The second is the pogrom of 1966/1967 in Kano and Kaduna? Till date, nobody was arrested. Nobody was prosecuted or convicted for murder, arson and looting. Lest we forget, it is this impunity over the years that has metamorphosed into an controllable monster called Boko Haram. Boko Haram is not imported. It is a phenomenon nurtured by the Northern elite to consolidate their hold on power at the centre. It may have developed some international “tentacles” but it was wholly home-grown. The Northern elite have lost control of what they created.

Third, how can Gowon justify the signing away of the Bakassi Peninsular without consulting the indigenes, all in a desperate move to win his war against Emeka Ojukwu? Gen. Gowon traded away a people, their land, the resources and the strategic position of the Bakassi Peninsular. Fourthly, what is Gowon’s explanation for the starving to death of two million children in Biafra? Was there no other way to avoid this monumental human tragedy?

Finally, how will Gowon justify signing the Abandoned Property decree? How will Gowon reconcile that decree with “No victor, No vanquished”? How will he reconcile the Abandoned Property law with his “RRR” (Reconciliation, Rehabilitation, Reconstruction)? The “RRR” was cleverly hijacked by the Lagos/Ibadan propaganda machine because Western Nigeria benefited immensely from Gowon’s dictatorship. “RRR” existed only on the pages of Tribune, Sketch and Herald newspapers. There was nothing on ground for the devastated Easterners. It was Sam Mbakwe and Jim Nwobodo that started reconstructing roads in 1979 (nine years after “RRR” was declared by the Federal Government). It is now (40 years after the war) that Rotimi Amaechi and Godswill Akpabio are reconstructing and expanding pre-war roads in their states. Nigerians waiting for Gowon’s memoir may have to wait forever.

This is so, so true. It's unfortunate how Nigerians celebrate war crime criminals and refer to them as heros. Gowon failed to see reason and today so many innocent Nigerians including his people, have been slaughtered all because of one man's selfish intrest to rule this country. I pray he acknowledges his wrong and seeks Gods forgiveness.

OP I totally agree with ALL your observations.

I would summarize it by saying that there is NO WAY for Gowon to justify his "Police action" against the Eastern Region, after reneging on Aburi.
NO WAY.

I suspect that Gowon must have been mis-advised by those who preach "might is right", but any TRUE Christian knows that there is God who is the final power and judge of ALL men irrespective of their worldly powers.

If you take a very careful look, you will see that God has already judged ALL the key players who foisted war on Nigeria, and in the process killed 2 million innocent Nigerians. He is visiting them one by one. Even powerful nations which played devious roles against Biafra will not be spared by God.

Nigeria's problems would have been solved since 1966 ( a whopping 47 years ago!), but today we are on the verge of another war in the North (Gowon's home region), this time foisted by an extremely violent sect, fanned by Satan himself.

God's judgment is SURE. cool

Gowon's memoir would only amount to self immolation.

You have a very dark soul, and I have decided to interact as little as possible with dark souls henceforth.

So, I would say this once to you and then leave you to continue on your usual path.

History states that Ojukwu never planned nor wanted war. He went to Aburi and painstakingly negotiated a peaceful settlement (an internationally supervised Accord) to end the Nigerian crisis.
Everybody, including Gowon, signed onto that Accord happily, raised glasses, hugged and all the rest, only for Gowon to return to Nigeria to trash the Accord. History also recorded that Gowon was the first to order a military action against Eastern Nigeria. All these are facts. Ojukwu never initiated any war; Gowon did.

History also shows that Ojukwu was given a burial which even Nigerian presidents never got. His fame is all over Africa and people like Jerry Rawlings graced his funeral. His coffin was carried by GENERALS in the Nigerian army. These are FACTS.

Now, lets wait for your hero Gowon to die, and lets compare notes then.

Bye. cool

Must everything be written for goodness sake?
Write a memoir for just teaching rebels a lesson and bring them back to understanding.

You could have even asked why Abraham Lincoln didn't write his own memoir of the civil war before being killed by john wilkes booth on the 15th of April 1865.

I killed a rat yesterday. You can as well ask me to write my memoir of the rat killed and how it was killed.

Major-General James Oluleye wrote a powerful memoir, in which you can see how and when Awolowo, Adebayo, et al, abandoned Biafra. You will also see how Brigadier Obasanjo, as Head of State, was under Colonel Shehu Yar'adua, his official subordinate.
Before that, Dimka and Zamani Lekwot were leading the massacre of Ibos in Kaduna. Today they are paying and will continue to pay dearly for that decision.
Lt-General TY Danjuma may enjoy all the Oil Blocks as his war booty, as the hero that killed Ironsi, but he will never write any memoirs.
But the Civil War History must emerge. At least, Boko Haram, sponsored by those that controlled Brigadier Obasanjo, and assume that Nigeria is theirs to rule, are forcing issues, to throw up the facts that led to the civil war.

True but then how can he justify not writing it to not just his children and grand children but also our children and grand children. He is an icon just cos his endeavours and mis-endeavours is one of the things responsible for putting Nigeria into the decay it is now. If he dies without writing it, it will be a heavy loss to us all. Cos we still have a lot of unanswered questions that he could clear up (that is if he doesn't adoltrate the truth like some of our leaders did while writing theirs. We should learn in Nigeria to do things for the greater good and not just to benefit ourselves.

Why should somebody with healthy brain want to derail this educative thread?

It is time the Civil liberties and well meaning Nigeria force him to write his memoir.

We need to the know the truth from his perspective as the Head of State and Commander of Armed Forces.

If it does require granting him Amnesty even before the memoir, Nigerians are ready for to pardon him, in that the memoir is more important than his incarceration at the Hague.

He will not write anything, because our motto in Nigeria is this: 'Lets forge ahead!'

We hate critical analysis into history. We hate critical analysis into problems. We like 'reconciliation' without introspection.

Why should Gowon write his point of view upon seeing the insults from juveniles in the South West about Achebes PERSONAL PERSPECTIVE. Before writing a memoir in Nigeria, you have to understand that you are dealing with a majority of illiterates and half illiterate kids who are the spawn of a poor educational system.

If Gowon wants to write a memoir where he refers to Ojukwu as a coward who was unprepared for war and ran and left his people to die, na 3rd world war be dat, oh! Igbo half educated youths will call him of all sorts of unimaginable names on social media, and brand him a bigot.

'Sense' is defined in Nigeria as keeping your mouth shut and chopping your money. Our youths have been devastated by illiteracy.

A sage left a piece of historical genius work called 'There was a country'. In other climes, there would be symposiums discussing and analysing the book with arguments for and against it. There would be other books countering or justifying the premises of the book. In Nigeria, jobless youth did not even buy the book...they heared in a bus that Chinua Achebe 'insulted' Awolowo, and with their nokia phones they did not let us have peace on nairaland.

...and you want Gowon to write a memoir? We are not that sophisticated in Nigeria.

These Biafrans no fit tire. Because as Achebe of Blessed memory put it " A man who does not know where the rain started beating him, will not also know where or when his clothes will dry".
All major players of that unfortunate civil war that claimed over 3 million lives, should tell their own side of the story. Let them give their own account and let Nogerians and Posterity be their judge.
This time around Silent is not Golden on the part of Gowon. His people have been slaughtered and are still being slaughtered.
I pity all those that feel that this is an Igbo thing so it does not concern them. A time will come and it is already happening when all ethnic groups will feel the pain of being left alone to deal with those that will arise and oppress them.
Examples, Odi massacre, The incessant killing of Gowon's people in their home stead..... etc.
It is either we dialogue and talk about the civil war and even teach it in the school curriculum or we shut up and continue in this vicious cycle. Believe me you it will surley go round to all tribes making up this entity called Nigeria.
