A professor of Mass Communication at the University of Maiduguri (UNIMAID), Borno State and former chief of staff to former First Lady Stella Obasanjo, MURTALA MOHAMMED has been murdered by unknown gunmen in Maiduguri, Borno State capital today.

He was gunned down outside his home, and the reasons for his killing have not been ascertained. However, Borno State for some years has been the site of insecurity with an unprecedented level of violence. Recently, President Goodluck Jonathan paid a visit to the troubled states of Yobe and Borno State after 3,000 police officers and other security operatives were drafted to the region.

Said to be well-known, the late Professor Mohammed returned to the state not too long ago to start classes at UNIMAID. Before then, he was staying in Jigawa State with his wife and two children. He was aged 56.
