FEC Approves Reopening Of UNTH Heart Surgery Unit

The Federal Executive Council (FEC) has approved the reintroduction of open heart surgery in the University of Nigeria Nsukka (UNN) teaching hospital Enugu.

The Minister of Information, Labaran Maku, who disclosed this to state house correspondents after the council meeting, said Nigerians no longer have to go to India and other parts of world in search of surgery. He said the heart surgery in Enugu will cost only N500, 000.

The reopening of the heart surgery is following recent initiatives by the Minister of Health, Onyebuchi Chukwu as well support from Nigerians in diaspora.

The open heart surgery unit at the UNN was suspended ten years ago, following its movement from an old site within the Enugu metropolis to its permanent site at Ituku-Ozala.

This will greatly reduce the frequency of overseas medical trips. Kudos to the Health minister and the Nigerians in the diaspora who made this facility a reality.

Good development no doubt but long overdue, similar gesture should as a matter of utmost importance be extended to other teaching hospitals in the country to ensure efficient utilization and prevent overcrowding.

Kudos!

The minister should also plan on how to equip it to international standard with experienced and credible Doctors, and not these glorified health centres that are labelled hospital across the country.

they didnt add that some white surgeons from US came around to perform some open heart surgeries to launch the unit. about 15 surgeries were done.
the security detail ( one mopol per white dude) was the annoying part. not cool seeing guns around the hospital.
and as for the oauth person. do they do open heart surgeries in that place? no. calm your titties.

This is a welcome development, it's high time we started investing in our own health system.

Once again the Igbos prove themselves a tribe of high intellect, Igbos continue to do exploits while the Hausas (muslim ones to be precise) are engrossed in their quest for innocent blood and 12 year old virgins

This is some wonderful piece of news. The only thing left is to consistently provide the unit with up-to-date equipment.

On the surface, this sounds like a good news right?
But why does the FEC have to approve it? How many doctors, cardiologists, cardiothoracic surgeons, vascular surgeons are in the FEC?
The FEC should concern itself with making a nurturing environment for hospitals, companies, universities, etc to open cardiac centers in Nigeria.
BTW, open heart surgery is no longer in vogue. While some cardiac diseases are still only amenable to open heart procedures, many more are managed by interventional cardiologists who simply place a stent to open a clogged artery, and the patient goes home happy, and without any deblitating chest wound.
The antiquated FEC should stay out of certain business enterprise for the country to move forward.

Government understands quite well how gullible and weak minded an average Nigerian could be so she plays all the time on our intelligence. The Minister coming out to announce a project at approval stage is heart rendering and completely unnecessary. Right thinking Nigerians would have expected him to tell us how the centre had been completed and fully equipped with needed modern facilities. This is a country where first name of people in government is corruption for crying out loud.

How is he as a minister of health addressing the health issues that can lead people, especially the children, into developing heart abnormalities? 500k he said? When children are dying in large numbers for not being able to afford N100 malaria drugs.

Health is beyond "approving the introduction of open heart surgery". Nigerians need access to qualitative, affordable health care. Government should stop playing politics with our lives.
