On Wednesday, a large-sized Fish suspected to be
a Pygmy sperm Whale was spotted ashore Lekki
beach, precisely at Magbon-Alade area of Ibeju
Lekki – Lagos – although it is not confirmed if it was
dead as at the time it was sighted.
Quite predictably, residents of the area and
funseekers descended on the mammal with their
machetes, knives, jigsaws and every other type of
sharp object as everyone wanted to have a piece of
its flesh.
According to Wikipedia, the pygmy sperm whale
(Kogia breviceps) is one of three species of toothed
whale in the sperm whale family and they are not
often sighted at sea; most of what is known about
them comes from the examination of stranded
specimens.
Can this behaviour be blamed on poverty because
this appears to be a rare opportunity that could
have been useful as a case study by Nigeria’s
marine biologists.
