Borno State government yesterday said it has reviewed the scholarship allowances of 6, 353 students studying in various institutions of higher learning by over 800 per cent for two academic sessions, while the arrears of bursary allowances would be paid this month.

State Commissioner of Higher Education, Alhaji Bello Ayuba, disclosed this yesterday at the Musa Usman Secretariat complex, Maiduguri.

He said that the present bursary allowances paid to the students are grossly inadequate and does not reflect the present economic realities of studying in institutions of higher learning in the country.

Ayuba lamented that the old scholarship allowances for pre-National Diploma (pre-ND), Nigeria Certificate of Education (NCE) and Remedial students was N1, 820, while those of undergraduates was pegged at N3, 080 per session without covering other expenses.

He said with the approval of a new students’ bursary allowances by Governor Kashim Shettima, the rates are now respectively increased to N10, 000 and N20, 000 per student/session, while those for law students’ was also reviewed from N250, 000 to N300, 000 with a laptop.

Speaking on outstanding bursary allowances, the commissioner said; “With the new approved increases in bursary allowances for students, the state government has already earmarked N130 million for payment this month for the 2010/11 and 2011/12 sessions.”

He, however, urged the students to reciprocate governments’ gesture by doing well in their studies, so that the educational transformation efforts of the state government could be effected within the shortest possible time.

He also called on students to purchase the scholarships forms on sale, as interviews for the 2012/13 Borno State scholarships will commence in July this year.
