Volkswagen Golf III 2,0 GTI 16V.

Decent cars, but as with all automobile, there are weak points.

The GTI, besides the VR6 is the only model to have rear disc brakes. The handbrake mechanism is prone to seizing - when this happens, the rear brakes still work fine, but the handbrake will be defective on the side with the faulty caliper. Make sure the handbrake works well, try it on a moderate slope. If this isn't possible, engage the handbrake, and try to pull away in first gear. If you can do so easily, the handbrake is defective - see reason above. The same applies if the handbrake pulls up too high (more than 6 clicks is considered high).

Central locking system is pneumatic, driven by a pump. If the pump runs on too long, like beyond 5 seconds, there's an air leak in one of the pipes. The pump is audible as a hum. The most common areas for leaks is where the vacumn pipes go through the doors into the pillars (hidden in rubber grommets). Easy to repair, the hardest part is locating the leak. Usually you'll hear a hissing sound from the leak (you may need to sit in the car, and operate the lock button in a quiet place).

Timing belt! This is a maintenance issue, and must not be ignored. The 2,0 GTI motor (ABF) is a twin cam unit, though the belt is linked to just one cam, with the other cam being driven internally by a short chain. This design makes replacement as easy as that of an 8V GTI, or a 1,6/1,8 CL, GL etc. Replacement shouldn't take more than 90 minutes. It is very important that everything that the timing belt rotates against is replaced, so the tensioner / idle must be replaced along with the belt. It is pointless replacing the belt alone.

The 2,0 ABF engine runs a MAF, made by Siemens. Very reliable, and failures are rare. Beware of cars running cone air filters - the oil they require to trap dust isn't kind to MAF's.

The 2,0 GTI 16V is manual transmission only, a close-ratio 5-speed is standard fitment. Shifts should be smooth. Any sloppiness in the shift lever is usually wear in the selector lever. The selector is linked to the gearbox by cables, not rods as fitted to the 2,0 GTI 8V and all other models (VR6 excluded). There are two cables, both are adjustable on the gearbox end. Do not adjust them though, as if you lose the basic settings, gearchanges will become notchy, some gears won't select, and unless you know what you're doing, you'll struggle to get the settings right.

The 2,0 GTI 16V clutch is hydraulic, and shouldn't be an issue.

Servicing should be carried out twice annually. So every 6,000 miles or 6 months, whichever comes first. Fuel filter should be replaced once a year. Always replace the oil filter with a genuine one at each oil change - "washing" and replacing the old one is a definite no-no.

The guy got no liver at all. He opted for Toyota Camry then. Sorry, I don't know about the current price but should range between 500-700k for good ones.
