Nigerians hoping to soon enjoy stable electricity supply will have to wait till 2050 going by indications from the National Energy Policy.

Declaring open a forum of the World Energy Council in Abuja on Monday, the Minister of State for Energy in-charge of Power, Mrs. Fatima Balaraba Ibrahim, said that the policy, which would soon be passed into law, had forecasted that the entire nation would only have stable electricity by 2050, while stable electricity would be available to only 75 per cent of the population by the year 2020.

Less than 40 per cent of the population currently have access to electricity supply.

According to her, the Federal Government is concluding work on the policy, which is being facilitated by the Energy Commission of Nigeria as a prelude to forwarding it to the National Assembly for passage into law.

She noted that government wanted to harness all resources available to the country to generate electricity.

She said, ”It is disheartening, however, that availability is just about 40 per cent of the population. It is therefore evident that there is a large gap to be bridged in order to meet our national aspirations. Unfortunately, the largest proportion of the deficiency is in the rural areas, where about 70 per cent of our population resides.

”It is, however, heart warming to know that work on the development of the National Energy Policy will soon be finalised to enable the policy be enacted into law to give it the necessary legal backing.”

She stressed that one of the major factors militating against the development of Nigeria, and most developing countries, was inadequate energy supply, emphasizing that growth in demand for energy far exceeded the supply.

Ibrahim added, ”It is in realisation of the need for energy security in the country that the Federal Government has adopted the dual strategy of increasing capacity as well as diversifying energy generation base.

”In line with the basic elements of the seven-point agenda of this administration, the government is committed to ensuring that all national resources are optimally harnessed to power our developmental needs.

”This is particularly pertinent, if we must achieve the national objective of growing our economy to be one of the 20 biggest economies of the world by the year 2020, and to be among the first 10 biggest economies of the world by 2050. It is against this backdrop that President Umaru Musa Yar‘Adua has identified energy as a pivotal sector, which must be strengthened and restructured.”

Wouldn't it be better for houses in Nigeria to disconnect from NEPA or whatever name it's been called, and get connected to generator,at least one will be sure of electricity once your tank is full,I often wonder what Nigerian are waiting for!it's glaring and crystal clear that the politicians have failed the people,it's high time people rise up and demand a change!

The year 2050 or 3050 is WAY too optimistic of a prognosis regarding Nigeria's prospects of ever seeing electricity that does NOT come from a smoky generator.

Realistically, "When hell freezes over " would be a far more accurate time frame in which legitimate expectations may be held that this never-ending parade of genetically-coded Nigerian kleptomaniacs like former president Obasanjo and his retarded morbidly obese daughter Iyabo would EVER stop stealing ALL the money intended for electrical power generation in Nigeria.

Historians need not consult books to learn about the Stone Age. They need only visit Nigeria any time between now and when hell freezes over in order to witness life reduced to its most elemental and existential rudiments.
