Dozens killed at Nigeria funeral

At least 39 people have been killed in Nigeria's Taraba state as clashes broke out between Christians and Muslims at a funeral, say reports.

Residents said Friday's violence broke out as a funeral procession for a traditional leader passed through a Muslim area of Wukari town.

A 24-hour curfew has been imposed on the town by police.

Tensions have been high in Wukari since February, when a row over a football dispute set off sectarian rioting.

Local reports say that Friday's funeral was being held by the predominantly Christian Jukun ethnic group.

As the mourners passed through a Muslim area of the town they began chanting slogans which angered the residents there, say the reports.

One aid worker told the AFP news agency that 20 bodies had been collected so far.

"We are still going round the town in search of more bodies," he said, speaking on condition of anonymity.

Football clashes

Joseph Kwaji, a spokesman for the Taraba state police, said the situation was now under control and police were "awaiting a comprehensive investigation".

all this killings and blood shed may seem a bit overwhelming... but the truth is that Nigeria as a nation has wasted so many innocent blood that the natural law has to come into play.
Blood calleth for more Blood. The more wee justify killings of innocents either in Odi, Baga, Jos, Biafra or any other place then we will keep going in this vicious cycle. The emphasis is on shedding the Blood of the Innocent.
Nigeria should make restitution as a Nation, it is not enough to keep saying RIP to the dead.
anyways, RIP to the dead.

Tolerance for one another is what we need in this country. People are so bitter and resentful in their hearts toward others to the point where killing is considered a trivial issue! May God help us!

^^^This goes to show that Islam isn't the problem, rather the intolerant, superior mindset and expansionist disposition of the core northern elite and their foot-soldiers (not forgetting their sense of entitlement and ownership of Nigeria as espoused by Ahmadu Bello) is our problem in this country.

They fooled others in the 60's to think that Ndigbo are Nigerias' problem, and hence found it easy to find willing allies in most other ethnicities (that should have known better at the time.....but for the fear of Igbo domination) to help crush 'the problem'; Nigeria survived 'as is' (even though the enlightened ones among them could have used that window of opportunity to restructure this country à la Aburi accord); and the rest as they say is history......and a bloody one at that!
