i personally believe a fine would be more appropriate, suspending BA operations seem absurd.

Finally a real man! Here is someone at least who is not hanging unjustifiably to a position.

@topic

the most sacred of possessions is your live and your honour (not necessarily in that order)

If the president is even pretending to stand up for the honour of Nigerians, he should be encouraged and not shouted down with cynicism. Never mind a few misbehaving citizens, never mind infrastructure isn't in good shape.

Imagine if your loving/loved parents were on that plane.

I just believe whatever bit of good move by the leadership, even if you are of the opinion they are minimal and too few, it still should be encouraged and commended.

I wonder why you always seize on every opportunity to degrade Nigeria, what have you . You are a Nigerian, You are a Nigerian, You are a Nigerian and you will forever remain a Nigerian, just because you hold a green card doesnt make you an American, - not even an American passport.  with a green card you can be deported easily.

Recognize that and try to uplift Nigeria, because how you are treated is how you project yourself , and you are a Nigerian.
BA has been suspended before and it can easily be done again, other carriers operate in Nigeria.

Look, I am a Nigerian and a very proud one.  One thing I will not tolerate is mentally lazy buffoons who look for pity parties all over the globe when Nigerians are disgracing themselves all over the world with their stupidity!

BA has been suspended before?  Are you not ashamed?  How do you feel when you type such humiliating words for the world to read?

A country without it's own airlines suspending others who are serving it's unruly citizens.  For BA to act like it did. . .the Nigerians are just what they are. . . uncouth wretches!  How can you condone that?  Do you see Kenyans or Ghananians facing the same treatment. . . of course they have their own airlines.

When you suspend BA. . .then you suspend Delta too. . .and so on and so forth.  Lazy things!

Trying to uplift Nigeria. . .na for mouth?  Tell your nasty Nigerian citizens to behave! Period!

Alot of investigation needs to be conducted as the maltreatment of Nigerians abroad is getting more worisome every year. I want to believe this is a move in the right direction. Get more up to date news on www.naijagurus.com

I see where you are coming from, but the prospect of BA being suspended might make them pay the fine, because Nigeria is a very lucrative route.

Yeah. If the Nigeria government can get them to do that, then that would be getting them to admit that they screwed up. Which is good for Nigeria.
But please, You guys should not miscontrue other people's opinion here. Nobody is saying thumbs up to the BA for doing what they did. We are just saying that we know why they could do that. And the ultimate solution would be to address the "why's rather than pick out some isolated incident(s)

what many in here are trying to say is that Yaradua is doing the right thing even though it might not be the most pressing or most important. Yes, there are other more important issues we hope that Yar'dua will address those in due time. Sometimes we need to cut a slack for the government, commend them when they do something right, while still making them aware of other issues. But totally critisizing the government for everything even the good, seems to me to be something that drives a regressive progress.

Yar Adua, God bless him, his heart is in the right place but his priorities are misplaced.

If the focus is now on how Nigerians are treated in other countries then as I said, there are at least 46 Nigerians currently being incarcerated in another black country, Barbados, yet no sign of the Nigerian government coming to rescue them. Then there are the many incidences of Nigerians being treated like dogs by the Chinese in their factories and even imprisoned. . .yet no investigation.

Go to Italy and see how Nigerian ladies who have been tricked by madams to leave Nigeria and are been beaten and raped. Are they not Nigerian citizens? Where is the investigation?

Abi is it because these particular Nigerians don't have money to fly BA, that they don't even warrant an intervention by their own Government??

Can any one please cite legitimate cases of abuse by BA please?  Why are we having this discussion in a vacuum?

PROVIDE EVIDENCE PLEASE!!!!

If you child comes to tell you that the teacher put him or her on a time out. . . instead of most of you to find out what happened. . .I see like the retarded creatures only a country like Nigeria can produce. . .you will head straight to school to go and make fools of yourself. . .even when you find out that your precious little demon stood in front of the class and urinated on a fellow classmate.

I say you guys are disgraceful. You lie! If you think some of us will seat back and pat you on the back for bad behaviour. . .you are dreaming! You will have to find your pity party of stupidity elsewhere.  It just goes to show how most of you were raised.  Without parental or adult supervision. . .just roaming from motor park to motor park half-naked!

This piece is from today's Guardian. 04/07/04. Will some Nigerians be filing class action law suit against Mantu or BA to compensate for the delayed flight?.
Quite funny though how things work in Nigeria. But the Mantu episode is just one of the many things to expect in societies where law and order are perceived "european".
They just keep it real don't they?.

================================================

In Defence Of Mantu
By Reuben Abati

I was at a dinner on Friday evening (one of the perks of this job is that you get to eat a lot of free food, drink free beer, and grow a massive pot belly in the process) when someone brought up the reported case between Deputy Senate President, Alhaji Ibrahim Mantu and the British Airways.

The story as outlined in the Nigerian Tribune of Friday July 2, is as follows: Alhaji Mantu wanted to travel out of Nigeria on a British Airways (BA) flight the other Tuesday, but because he had an unconfirmed First Class ticket, the BA officials could not get him a seat in the First Class category.

They then offered him a Business Class seat which he declined.

"The Deputy Senate President caused a stir by delaying the take off of the flight for more than five hours.

Angered by this arrogant display of power, British Airways management through the Home Office, petitioned the Presidency demanding for compensation. Nigerian Tribune gathered on Thursday that the Presidency in a bid to get to the root of the matter, summoned the airport commandant, Group Captain A. B. Chizhe to Abuja, "

This was the story that riled some of the persons at dinner that evening. One man thumped the table, protesting that what Mantu has done is a national embarrassment and that he owes all Nigerians an apology.

Another fiery commentator opined that Mantu is clearly guilty of "gross misconduct" and as soon as possible, he should be impeached as Deputy Senate President. From another side of the table came the opinion that holding an unconfirmed ticket of any category is as bad as not being on the flight at all, and that the BA officials were even too kind to Mantu to have offered him a Business class seat.

One fellow, who used to have Marxist inclinations before he too began to enjoy the "dividends of democracy" asked a rhetorical question seeking to know why anybody would consider a Business Class seat infra dig. I did not quite express an opinion on that occasion, but I have since taken a second look at the story.

My conclusion is that Mantu is not to blame. I propose to defend him against the sadistic protests of those who are trying to politicise what is clearly a straightforward matter.
I think the editor of the Nigerian Tribune put his fingers on the matter by titling his paper's report, with an undisguised opinion: "British Airways maltreats Mantu", even if this does not quite agree with the somewhat ambivalent reference to "arrogant display of power" in the body of the story. What arrogance is British Airways talking about

*One basic principle in business is that a company has to be environment-friendly and this clearly involves an understanding of the culture, habits and values of the people that you are serving. British Airways officials through the British Home Office, are said to have petitioned the Nigerian Presidency. Do these people know who Mantu is

* Please let us not be ridiculous. British Airways is handling this matter inappropriately.

Those officials who denied Mantu a First Class seat do not understand Nigeria and they should be given tutorials about the Nigerian way of life.

Mantu is what in Nigeria we call, a "big man". The rule in this country is that a big man gets whatever he wants. He is not bound by rules, conventions or values. His "bigmanism" means that he can open all doors and do as he wishes. And nobody must challenge him, not even the law courts or government. He is a sacred cow. He is above the law. BA officials are complaining that Mantu had an unconfirmed ticket. Well, they need to be told that Mantu is not just a big man, he is Nigeria's No 5 or No 6 citizen. To be No 5 or No 6 in a country of over 120 million people

* Come on, a man like that in the understanding of the average Nigerian does not have to worry himself about confirming tickets before he travels. Once he gets to the airport, he expects any airline at all to obey his commands. By complaining about an unconfirmed ticket, the BA officials were challenging the authority of the Deputy Senate President of Nigeria.

They did not stop at that. They went on to commit the blunder of offering him a business class seat. Even Mantu's dog will not sit in the Business Class cabin. In this country, high office confers certain privileges. The Distinguished Deputy Senate President, the Rt. Honourable Alhaji Ibrahim Mantu to take a business Class seat

* If the British Airways people had done their home work very well, they would have known that such a lawmaker of high repute would not want to mix with business people. They were going to expose him to the risk of sitting next to contractors and all kinds of persons looking for government favours.

He would not have been allowed to enjoy his flight. Business people would have been coming to him with requests. And this is at a time when some banks are floating their shares in the capital market, and others are looking desperately for deposits. What if Mantu runs into one of those types from the banks and he is berated with details that can distract his attention from state business

* I even understand that those who travel in Business Class are always going about with proposals for contracts, and that any important government official who finds himself there could be exposed to a lot of harassment. Besides, Mantu is the Deputy Senate President. Even ordinary Senators do not travel Business Class. Why subject him to the indignity of a Business Class

* We have to understand that Mantu is not alone in this regard. Big men in Nigeria do not joke with that thing called "class". And this extends to their wives, children and countless concubines. They do not do all the things that we, ordinary people do. They always try to differentiate themselves. And the more uppity ones are those who came from very poor backgrounds. They will do everything to forget their own roots. I am not moralizing, but it just occurred to me that Mantu could not have sat in the Business cabin because again, it is too close to the economy class, that section of the aircraft reserved for the poor pretending to be rich and all sorts of wannabes. I am a veteran of the economy section. When you are there, people are coughing, sneezing, and rubbing their bodies off you. In fact, you share the section with all kinds, including deported illegal immigrants from Europe, drug couriers and drunkards. The economy section actually smells, and that is why now and then, the cabin staff fumigate the section with air fresheners.

A big man in Nigeria does not want to stay close to that kind of reality. The First Class cabin takes him far away, putting a distance between him and the people. And this reinforces the myth of his personality. I know that Prime Minister Blair sometimes travels economy with his family. Even the Queen once boarded a commercial flight to Asia. But that is Britain. We are talking about Nigeria, please.

In this country, the leaders run away from the people. They keep us at an arms length. Again, asking Mantu to travel Business Class would have amounted to asking him to help the Nigerian Government, which bought the ticket for him in the first place, to save some money. Public officials in Nigeria do not help government to save money. They love to spend. After all, Nigeria is an oil producing country and the cost of crude oil in the international market is rising and the country is having problems determining how best to spend its excess crude oil revenue. So, why blame Mantu

*British Airways is also complaining that Mantu held up the flight for more than five hours. Please, let us be reasonable. There is something in Nigeria called VIP Movement. When a VIP is moving, it does not matter where or in what direction, the standard practice is that everything else is held up. Other human beings are stopped from moving.

Their right to freedom of movement is temporarily suspended. I once spent five hours at the local airport because of VIP movement. Our plane could not move because a big man or may be his child or mistress was going to travel on that same flight. When a VIP in Nigeria wants to travel, he simply calls the airport and asks that any available flight to his destination should be delayed. After making this call, he then begins to prepare for the journey.

Other passengers are kept waiting until he arrives some four hours later. They don't behave in this manner in neighbouring Ghana. But that is Ghana. This is Nigeria. Whoever wants to do business here should respect our culture. Mantu even did well. He came to the airport. The flight was delayed only because he did not get the seat he wanted. What if he had phoned at take-off time that he was still in the bathroom and the BA flight should be delayed for him

*Would British Airways have defied the Deputy Senate President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria

*How should British Airways have handled the situation

* Instead of accusing Mantu of "arrogance" (who is being arrogant here by the way), they should have asked one of those 419 people who also like to travel First Class to give up his or her seat for the Deputy Senate President of Nigeria. This does not require much effort. All they needed to do was to announce specially that the Deputy Senate president of Nigeria would like to travel First Class, would someone be kind enough to give up his seat

* I want to bet that there would have been very enthusiastic volunteers. The only stubborn ones perhaps would be one or two people who think that the likes of Mantu are upstarts. But don't worry about such people.

They are always outnumbered by those who are ready to play ball who would not only give up their seats, they would also request for a handshake with the Deputy Senate President, just for him to know that they would like to be his friends. In fact, if care is not taken, they will offer to buy Mantu drinks. If British Airways does not understand these nuances, then they have no business doing business in Nigeria. Now, come to think of it. They have asked the Home Office to petition the Presidency because of Mantu. They are asking for compensation. Are we still a colony of Britain

*Is the Home Office going to dictate how Nigerian public officials should behave

*Sorry, we are a sovereign nation, and Alhaji Mantu happens to be one of those in whom according to President Obasanjo himself, sovereignty resides!

I want to end this piece by offering British Airways some useful tips about how to do business in Nigeria. I am doing this free of charge on a Sunday morning as a true Christian. They don't have to send me a complimentary ticket in appreciation. I don't need it because I am not a government official.

But talking seriously, British Airways has to learn to respect Nigerian public officials. I don't think that a delegation of BA officials went to pay homage to Mantu when he arrived at the airport wielding a BA ticket. That was error number one. If they had done this, may be the man would not have delayed the flight for over five hours! Then, when there is a Nigerian VIP on board, every BA pilot has to be instructed to announce the presence of the fellow and thank him specially for flying BA.

For failing to pay due courtesies to Mantu, British Airways is running great risks that even the Home Office in London would not be able to handle. What if Mantu's kinsmen decide to start an ethnic riot in protest against the "maltreatment" (thank you Tribune Editor) of their kinsman

*And what if Mantu organises a fresh legislation on the aviation industry which is meant strictly to curb the arrogance of British Airways

*In fact the Senate can pass a law withdrawing the licence of British Airways. This is certainly possible,

I don't believe Nigerians are necessarily pessimistic people at all. It is just that when you see something you feel is wrong, there is absolutely nothing wrong with addressing it as you see it. I think we have more Nigerians who feel that all that has to be said must be positive else such voices should be shut down at all cost. In this case, we have a president who I see has more important issues to deal with. One year in government and still nothing to show for it. We have Nigerians in Nigeria whose rights are violated on a daily basis. Thousands in prison who are yet to get their day in court and the president prefers to label an external case of higher priority?? Why?? so Nigerians who are well off can comfortably fly around the world while the man who are unable to fly continue to have their rights trampled on by the same government?? We continue to try to play the same games as the big boys play, forgetting the fact that we have so much more work to deal with before we can decide to play as they play. As long as things remain as they are in that country, I am guessing this man is going to have to deal with more and more of these sort of cases cause you do not DEMAND respect, you EARN it by your own actions, not by going out each time to claim that you deserve to be respected. It does not work that way in the real world.

Here is another stupid Nigerian with the petition craze!

A PETITION

European Airlines' Maltreatment of Africans Must Stop

by Prof. Bedford N. Umez

Prolog
The long history of exploitation and maltreatment of African people by European airlines can no longer be ignored. In fact, they must stop. The petition below is a rallying call for an end to such exploitation and maltreatment which are obvious to any one who travels to and from Africa with any one of these European airlines.

Specifically, this is our position: Since African people are a part of the human race, European Airlines should treat them with respect and dignity, just like they treat any other group of human beings who are not Africans. As such, the apparent maltreatment of Africans by the European airlines will no longer be ignored. We must stop this maltreatment NOW.

Signing of the petition has ended today, April 1, 2005. However, you can participate in the poll at the end of this petition. For questions about this petition, send an email to: umez@umez.com or call 281-425-6368.

Together, we will matter and make Africa proud again.

Thanks for your continued fraternal support and be blessed abundantly.

A PETITION: European Airlines’ Maltreatment of Africans Must Stop

Considering the exorbitant air fares being charged on African routes by European Airlines;
Considering the poor services given to Africans and the rudeness of most staff of European Airlines to Africans;
Considering that mosquito and other insect killing chemicals are being sprayed in the passenger areas of these European airplanes right before leaving Africa for Europe;
Considering that much older planes are being used for African routes;
Considering that flights to and from Africa are generally overbooked; and
Considering the unwarranted and humiliating searching of African passengers by Customs officials at the airports in Europe, we, the signatories, therefore:
Call upon the United Nations, Organization of African Unity, Organization of American States, International Civil Aviation Organization, Federal Aviation Administration, and the European Union to investigate maltreatment of Africans by the European airlines and ask, without further delay, European airlines to:

Lower the exorbitant air fares being charged to Africans;
Improve the quality of their services to Africans, e.g., the quality of the meals;
Use newer planes (which are comparable to those used in Trans-Atlantic flights) to transport Africans to and from Europe and America;
Stop spraying mosquito and other insect killing chemicals WHILE African passengers are seated in these flights;
Stop overbooking of Africans to Europe/North America; and finally,
Search Africans with dignity, respect and decorum, and generally apply the universal standard of treating all customers as equals.
We condemn strongly the apparent injustice to Africans, and in support of our petition, submit that:

1. For so long, European airlines, specifically, Lufthansa, Alitalia, British Airways, KLM, Virgin Atlantic, Air France, and Swissair have continuously charged Africans exorbitant fares. Compare, for instance, the following standard round trip fares from the US to Africa and from the US to Asia (21-day advance purchase, Source: Yahoo Travel, January 23, 2002).

US to AFRICA US to ASIA
Houston, US to Ghana = $1,570 Houston, US to Beijing, China = $649
Houston, US to Nigeria = $1,539 Houston, US to Tokyo, Japan = $608
Houston, US to Kenya = $1,813 Houston, US to Korea = $658
Houston, US to Tanzania = $1,929 Houston, US to Philippines = $715

It is noteworthy that the distance between the US and Asia is much longer than that between the US and Africa. For instance, while the distance between Houston, US and Ghana is 5,513 nautical miles, the distance between Houston, US and Beijing, China is 6,276 nautical miles. While some rationalize the higher fares by arguing that Africa has less traffic volume, it must be noted that flights to/from African countries are often overbooked (as noted in item 4 below).

2. The rudeness of most European airline staff to Africans is serious enough to bother any human being with a conscience. Africans at European airports are simply ignored, snubbed and downrightly disrespected. In fact, a substantial number of African passengers feel frustrated when trying to ask European flight attendants and the staff any question concerning their connecting flights. Furthermore, the quality of food and refreshment offered in flights to and from African countries leaves a lot to be desired. For instance, food served to passengers leaving Europe for Africa are in much smaller portion than those served to passengers from North America to Europe. While drinks are served to the passengers (mostly Westerners) from North America to Europe in whole bottles and cans, passengers from Europe to Africa (mostly Africans) are served with small plastic cups; higher fares paid by Africans notwithstanding.

3. In violation of moral code, mosquito and other insect killing chemicals (well-known to be dangerously harmful to humans) are being sprayed in the passenger areas of these European airplanes right before leaving Africa for Europe. In fact, what is shocking to any human being with a conscience is that these hazardous chemicals are sprayed WHILE African passengers are seated in these flights. Virgin Atlantic and British Airways are the worst in this regard. Africans are human beings; they are not insects.

4. Any one traveling from North America to Africa via Europe will note that airplanes on the Trans-Atlantic route are much newer and with much legroom, while those leaving Europe for Africa are much older and crampy. Africans deserve similar newer planes with similar legroom as those flying to and from North America and Europe.

5. Overbooking of flights to and from Africa by European airlines is well known, especially flights returning from Africa. It is also well known that some Africans have been stranded due to the overbooking of flights. Stories of some Africans waiting for days to be rebooked are common. No doubt, those stranded Africans suffer not only apparent inconveniences, but in addition and most importantly, financial losses.

6. African passengers, more often than not, have been singled out by some European airline officials and treated as criminals. As such, Africans have been subjected to the most unwarranted and humiliating search at European airports. Alitalia and Lufthansa are the worst in this strip-search. Some Africans have been stripped almost naked in the process of being searched. While we recognize the need for tighter security at airports, it is a well-known fact that Africans have long been subjected to strip-search at Western airports. Strip-searching only Africans is a gross violation of their fundamental human rights. Africans, like any other group of human beings, deserve respect and dignity.

Painfully noting the above injustice, mistreatment and sheer disrespect of Africans by the European airline officials, and the regrettable fact that so many African governments are indifferent to the sufferings of their own people, we, the signatories to this petition call for immediate action to remedy these gross abuses of human rights. We believe that addressing these concerns will be beneficial not only to Africans, but to the airlines, as well as humanity in general.

Look at what this idiot is writing here. . . when his country does not have it's own airline? Like a typical alaba trader. . . he is pricing and measuring the cheapest route and fares as being discriminatory. Comparing routes to Asia as further and cheaper that those to Africa which are closer and more expensive. Always pricing like they are in Pound road or Upper Iweka road.

Long hissssssssssssssssssssssssssssssss!

This time about all European airlines. cheesy

Fellow Nigerians. . .if all are complaining. . . you must have a serious problem.  I think only Jesus Christ is exempt from this kind of twisted logic! tongue

This was from 2005 and guess what? Has it changed anything?  All Nigerians can do is make a lot of stupid noise!

And if I am not married what is your business?  You think this is Nigeria where women fight to marry filthy, disease-infected, pot-bellied, polygamous, bush pigs like your Yar-arse-dua of a president in the name of marriage?  Yup!  I am not married.  Do your worst.  Rather be single and free than be chained to a stinking, pot-bellied wretch like you and your brothers!  I am free not like your sisters who are 10th and 15th wives to some toothless smelling young agberos or old goats!

Die if you want to die! kiss

Everybody here is entitled to his or her opinion. I know some people would want Yar'adua to upgrade our airpots and make our national carrier a leader in the business. And some other people like me would still want him to fight for my right when i am not in Nigeria, which he's trying to do and i do appreciate that

Anybody that insults any person here because of this simple issue is plain foolish and dumb

Bro, if you checked all that Almond posted in this forum I do not think that you will be seeing my own posts the way you are seeing it. I respect women and I do not easily get angry but what is it in Almonds head that is sending her coconuts in NLD.
She should only post in the culture forum, she needs to learn a few things from there.
About the wet dream stuff, I loathe her.

Here here!! but on resuscitating our own airways someone told me that Nigerian air planes are flying coffins so I don't think many people will be flying it. We should still have one in case but I think what British airways did was due to the whole terrorist scare. Everyone is now being super careful.

Yar'adua is in a no-win situation here. He says something or nothing, and people will still complain. To the question of if he did the right thing, yes he did. These things have to start from somewhere, at least he has shown that he is concerned and has made a stand for Nigerians. That's a good first step even if nothing concrete comes out of it. If only one other person in his administration takes a cue from it and it rubs off positively, it'll have achieved something. If people at least see that the governement cares, it might start to change some mindsets. Many are quick to criticize, but few offer any solutions or positive steps. It's always easy to spot the negative, but we should learn to build on the positive.
