Why Can't The Anambra State Government Build The Second River Niger Bridge??? by kcjazz(m): 4:00pm On Jun 01, 2013
For the past 25 years, every sitting President or Minister of Works promises that "Niger bridge would be repaired and the second bridge will commence soon". As we all know nothing has been done to that effect.

I have lived in Onitsha in the past so I kinda understand how important a second bridge will help the city in areas of transportation, employment rates, agriculture, real estate values and even tourism (if an open space is added for markets underneath).

In 2013, Anambra budget is at N110 billion, if the state government dedicates 0.005% (half of 1%) to the project for five years, it would be able to build a structurally sound bridge that could pay for itself in a few years if a toll gate is added at the Onitsha end of the bridge.

So the question is: Why can't the state government build the second bridge, if they truly believe it is so important to the economy of the state?

NB: Please no tribal insults, I just want to know why its not a solution at this time plus am Igbo tongue incase you are wondering.

Thanks!

Building a bridge across River Niger is not child's play. The estimated cost of building second Niger Bridge is N100billion. That is about the total annual budget of Anambra state.

Folks from that zone are busy building Lagos, Kano and Abuja. When they finish they'll pay attention to their region.

Op are you kidding me? The 2nd Niger bridge is to gulp an estimated 100 billion naira. That is more than 90% of Anambra state annual budget for the current year.
Re: Why Can't The Anambra State Government Build The Second River Niger Bridge??? by EkoIle1: 4:19pm On Jun 01, 2013
Of course the state can do it, but the will and sense of porpose is not there especially after building up decades of mental lazyness and understanding that's it's other people's responsibility even though the so called other people are not willing or ready to build that bridge no matter what.

We have the most useless and incompetent FG in the world and waiting and begging them to anything for you is not only foolish, it's criminal because your state government gets denied needed revenue from increased ecoonomic activities and your people pay more for goods and services.

You are the end user so do what you have to do and even borrow money if you must.

Get your facts right before talking. What was the cost of the suspension bridge? And who told you Niger bridge is less than 1 km long?

By the way, the Niger bridge is an interstate bridge.

I believe the state government can build the bridge across the Niger if they set their mind on it.

Delta state has built a similar bridge across the Niger without waiting for the federal government and without taking any loan for it across the Niger at Bomadi.

1. In less than 4 years, we built 3 major bridges while in 14 years later, your useless, worthless and incompetent uncles are yet to build 1 single bridge.

2.For 14 years, your crooked and lying uncles lied and stole votes with 2ND Niger bridge and til this very second, chovel never hit ground and it's still the same lies and votes stealing against 2015.

3. Jonathan was a governor just like Fashola, show us one single project he built and commisioned as a governor talkless bridge even as the president of Nigeria.

4. Don't cry for us over 4thMB because we are on the job and progressing accordingly, you should worry more about your incompetent zero bridge building Aso Rock uncles and dullards

Do they know, do they think, do they have a strategy? Do you not hear them ask why Lagos is collecting tolls on its roads. Fact is Anambra may not have a huge budget, however, with the right strategy and case for that project they will secure finance for it.

Get Delta, get Anambra and get the FG to guarantee repayment of any loan. Get the FG to also give out its water way. Then you build and collect your tolls. You boost economic activities, collect more taxes, the users of this road make more money through improved transport efficiency, concessionaire makes money from tolls, bank gets its principal and yield; and everybody is happy.

Peter Adaobi -the man woman- cannot even control mpiawazu boys in Onitsha so how do you expect him to have the vision and strategy for this.

They ask where the money is going to come from because they are not thinkers. Look at the railway they 'relaunched', a continuation of the same old same crap with trains spending 36 hours from Lagos to Kano. Yet the finance for that project was partly provided by the China Africa Development Fund. How are they going to repay the loan for a project that will hardly earn a positive net present value with the way it is being run? Of course 'Oyel' money, lazy thinkers, no strategy and the rot goes on and on.

Why can't Delta and Anambra set up a joint entity to build the bridge? Set up a joint venture, call it 'ANDE', develop a business case, lobby the useless FG to release its waterway and guarantee loans.

Toll your bridge, run it like a business. The benefit to a traveler avoiding Onitsha will far exceed the cost and they will be willing and happy to pay.

God bless you brother, if only majority of Nigerians are thinkers, we should be leading the world. Government money is not free money, what is stops a state like anambra from building that bridge and tolling it, turn the whole area to a business hub?
Some people would rather have it turned into a campaign tool for 2015. Ignoramus indeed.

I believe you, its all about the will and vision. Anambra and Delta states can jointly build the bridge by securing loan which the FG can guarantee or they can go into a PPP partnership. I am not from the SE but I feel the best way GEJ can compensate those from that region for supporting him is to build the bridge toll free. If the total cost of construction is N100billion, FG can prioritise the bridge and set aside N25billion for four years and not putting the people there into the slavery of a PPP arrangement!

By the way, the misnomer that the Niger Bridge is in Anambra is very mischievous.
It is an Inter State Bridge located at the boundary of Anambra and Delta States.
95% of the vehicles using that bridge come from South West and North. The Murtala Mohammed airport Lagos might be located in Lagos, but many of the passengers using the airport aren't necessarily native Lagos indigenes.

That huge traffic is what the state should benefit from, build the bridge, toll it and turn the place to a hub

That advice should go to Lagosians who are under Fashola's bondage of paying tolls for major structures erected COMPLETELY with public funds.

That of Second Niger bridge is a bit different. One is that there's already an existing and functional bridge. Secondly, right from the outset, everyone knows the project is being built under PPP (with 70% of the funds from private sector). I would prefer a PPP Second Niger Bridge delivered in 3yrs to fully FG funded bridge that may not be delivered in 10yrs.

Where is the 4th Mainland bridge promised by ACN since 1999?
