Abia: Oil Companies Boost Health-Care Delivery By Building Chest Clinic

Nigerians who travel to India, Europe and America, to seek treatment for chest-related ailments, have been given another opportunity to do so at home. Last week, a consortium of oil companies operating under the umbrella of Agbami Partners, donated a chest clinic to the Abia state government-owned Amachara Specialist Hospital and Diagnostic Centre, Umuahia.

The Agbami Partners made up of Petrobras, Chevron, Star Deepwater, Famfa Oil Limited, Napmins and Statoil are known for their commitment at ensuring that Nigerians have access to good healthcare, technical skills, quality education and employment opportunities.

The clinic which is equipped with the state-of-the- art facilities, was officially opened by Governor Theodore Orji, with representatives of the donor agency, and several senior government officials in attendance.

The spokesman of the group, and area manager Chevron, Port- Harcourt, Mr. Joe Jakpa, said the clinic was built in fulfillment of the social responsibility of the different oil companies to Nigerians.

The group further said it had followed with keen interest, the state government’s health policy, programmes, projects, and thereafter decided to build the clinic to complement the efforts of the government in providing quality health care projects that are of international standard

. “The chest clinic the Agbami partners are donating today is one of such projects being implemented to benefit Abia state and the entire nation. We believe quality healthcare system holds the key to better life for the people and the development of the country”

The partners also announced the award of 300 scholarships to intelligent Abia indigenes in tertiary institutions who are pursuing courses in medicine and health related courses to boost human resources in the health sector.

The chief medical director, (CMD), Abia state Specialist Hospital, Prof. Augustus Mbanaso, said that the hospital has capable hands to handle all the equipment installed in the clinic, as well as the technical manpower to effect repairs of the equipment.

Prof. Mbanaso said that the clinic will serve as a referral centre for the people of the South East and people from other parts of the country with chest related problems, including tuberculosis and other such cases.

Such collaboration between government and the private sector is a welcome development as it will reduce medical tourism where Nigerians spend millions of dollars for medical treatment abroad annually.

The chest clinic would solve the problem of the many patients who visit the hospital with chest related ailments. The medical director said the Abia state Diagnostic Cenre, ranked among the best in the world as any investigation carried out in them and taken by any patient to his hospital abroad is accepted and worked with without subjecting him to fresh tests unlike what obtained in the past.

Governor Orji expressed profound gratitude to the oil companies for donating the clinic thereby supporting his government’s healthcare programme, saying that functional healthcare system has become a top priority of his administration.

He said he was convinced that the provision of dividends of democracy could only be meaningful when the citizens are healthy because only those with good health could enjoy the amenities provided by government.

The donation of chest clinic, he added, could not have come at better time than now that the former Amachara General hospital, has been transformed from a glorified clinic to a Specialist Hospital that can now offer houseman ship to medical graduates,

Governor Orji said his administration was determined to make the state a centre for health tourism. And in pursuit of this programme, the administration has built and equipped Specialist Hospitals and Diagnostic Centres at Umuahia and Aba, as well as built and equipped 250 health centres across the state,

In furtherance to the administration’s determination to improve the health care services in the state, the governor has embarked on the construction of 100 bed hospitals at Amachara, Arochukwu, Ohafia, Ikwuano, Ugwunagbo, and Aba North, to provide specialist healthcare services at the secondary level of the health care delivery system.

In addition, he has built a paediatric centre at Amachara to give specialized attention to the children, and provided 17 ambulances for the 17 Local governments.

The diagnostic centres located in Aba and Umuahia have dialysis units in the two cities. There are Eye clinics in all the major hospitals, while facilities in the general hospitals across the state are being upgraded.

Speaking at the inauguration, the permanent secretary, Abia state ministry of health, Chief Eme Onyekaba, noted that the chest clinic would go a long way in improving the overall healthcare delivery system, especially the specialist treatment of diseases of the chest.

He said that Abia has achieved one hundred percent coverage in the treatment of tuberculosis, using the directly observed therapy (DOT) as well as the modern equipment provided at the chest clinic. Onyekaba said that the clinic will help the state to handle all chest related cases reported at the clinic.

Perhaps history has not judged Abia govt well because those responsible have not deised simple innovative ways to convince concerned stakeholders that indeed the govt is working. There is no reason why those working for the govt as publicists cannot proudly display photos of these developments. i lve 10s of 1000s of kilometers from Abia, but my own sources have confirmed them to be true; but for those still in doubt, there should be pictorial evidence of the Abia govt at work
