Medical Association Orders Resident Doctors To Call Off Strike by ayooluwa2(m): 12:51pm On Jun 28, 2013
Dr. Osahon Enabulele, National
President of Nigerian Medical
Association (NMA), on Thursday,
ordered the National Association of
Resident Doctors (NARD) to call off its
three-day warning strike, which
started on Wednesday.
Enabulele, who gave the directive in a
statement issued in Lagos, advised the
association to consider appeals from
various sectors and give room for a
well-articulated, constructive and
mature engagement with the relevant
agencies of government.
“Having reviewed the issues of dispute
and having initiated measures to
correct the perceived anomalies with
verifiable positive outcomes, NMA is
embarrassed by this industrial action,”
Enabulele said.
The statement read that at the first
National Health Summit held in Asaba
in January this year, doctors resolved
to stop strikes at the slightest
provocation giving room for
constructive and peaceful means of
dispute resolution first.
It warned that NMA would not
withhold applying the strongest
sanctions on any erring affiliate body
or individual member that violates the
constitutional provisions of the
association.
“The association will not hesitate to
sanction any affiliate body for
bringing the medical profession to
public disrepute,” the statement read.
Enabulele, however, apologised to the
public for any avoidable deaths and
health complications the strike might
have caused. He also appealed to the
Federal Government to correct the
observed budgetary shortfall and
apply all necessary administrative
sanctions on any erring head of
health institutions.
Dr. Ismail Lawal, the National
President of NARD, had on June 24
ordered his members nationwide to
embark on a three-day warning strike
from June 26, saying the industrial
action was to protest Federal
Government’s poor funding of the its
members’ residency training.
The association issued a 21-day
ultimatum to the Federal Government
to meet its demands..
