Gunmen early yesterday attacked a medium security prison in Akure, Ondo State and freed about 175 inmates.
The gunmen raided the Olokuta prison at about 12.30 am using explosives to force their way into the facility.
About 30 gunmen were said to be involved in the attack. They made way for the inmates to escape before they fled.
Witnesses said the gunmen attacked the walls with dynamite before gaining access to the over 180 capacity prison.
They moved from cell to cell and freed those they came for, while some took advantage of the development and ran away.
Witnesses say the prison is located a few kilometers from the 32 Artillery Brigade, Akure.
The Comptroller of Prison, Tunde Olaniyan denied four people died in the attack. He said some of the fleeing inmates had been arrested.
He said the gunmen had superior weapons making it possible for them to escape before reinforcement arrived.
Spokesman of the Ondo State police command, Wole Ogodo denied claims members of the Boko Haram sect carried out the attack. He said the attackers were armed robbers who came to free their colleagues in the prison.
