In a survey to find the best Liga player, organised by Spanish news daily Público, Iker Casillas came out top of the votes of Primera sporting directors,


Casillas Voted Top Liga Player By Directors

The likes of Monchi at Sevilla, Pedja Mijatovic at Real Madrid and Barcelona's Txiki Begiristain told Público of their choices for best player of the year in the Liga this season.

With the understanding that one could not vote for one's own player, Iker Casillas came top of the Best Player award with six votes. Dani Güiza of Mallorca came second with three, while Andrés Iniesta and Xavi - both Barcelona - tied for third with two votes alongside Sergio Ramos of Real Madrid.

Some of the 19 voters were also asked for their opinion on who is the best Spanish player in the world today. Getafe's Santiago Llorente said that it was Fernando Torres; Txiki went for Dani Güiza - perhaps foreshadowing a summer move for the striker - while Mijatovic backed Andrés Iniesta.

The "Best Foreigner in Spain" vote was largely split between Atlético Madrid's Sergio 'Kun' Agüero and Lionel Messi of Barcelona, although the likes of Seydou Keita of Sevilla also gained mentions. Diego López of Villarreal ran Casillas close for best 'keeper, while Sergio Ramos edged the best defender award.

In midfield the votes were rather evenly split - De la Red of Getafe and Xabi Alonso of Liverpool being two surprise mentions - while up front the usual suspects were accompanied by the likes of Diego Forlán.
