Well my main reason for starting this thread is for us Nigerian based web developers / designers who actually have taken the bold step to run their own firm against all odds,with all the obstacles faced in the rough Nigerian environment.Lets actually share experiences on the core challenges faced in the Web industry.

Basically the core issues i believe we have is actually erratic and epileptic Power Supply, Slow & expensive Internet access and lack of proper credit facilities for small but growing IT professionals.

Now im actually interested in seeing how we can address these issues objectively.Lets hear your views and proffer solutions.

ok well let me start by saying there is no industry that doesn't have a challenge, you don't let you challenges bring you down, every challenges is a step into your greatness. and it also boils down to your mindset. you can start as low as having a laptop and a phone with you taken them to cafe and browse and make contact to your clients, still boils down to mindset.

Hello everyone, I have watched with rapt attention, the loopsided growth been experienced by website owners. This cannot in anyway encourage the growth of the internet industry in Nigeria. A situation where you have so many sites being developed and designed but without Traffic on them signifies frustration to the owner, who mostly built with the intention of providing services or products for an ROI.

Today, we have so many BLOGS, FORUMS & SOCIAL NETWORKS but still don’t get the kind of traffic we desire for our sites, look at a Web2.0 like legwork, deoluakinyemi on wordpress, Nairaland using SMF, davidajao's blog and so on, you will discover, just about 1 or 2 of the sites are actually generating any thing tangible in terms of traffic. It has been observed that it is not so much as the platform that is being used but finding how to generate traffic to such platforms/sites.

Too date, we still do not have a standard Social network can that boast of at least 1million Nigerians on its database. The closest we've gotten is I believe, seun's Nairaland forum, whereas, the likes of Facebook has over 100million people, including Nigerians. There are a host of others, even outside of the United States.

Our media companies that should hold the bull by the horn (as in the case of myspace.com), are fretting. We need to have a very formidable social Networks for Nigerians and by Nigerians. This need can cannot therefore be overemphasized as this is what will drive the engine into the new dawn expected for the Internet industry in Nigeria.

This brings me to the need to incorporate a new social network for the Nigerian People, I want responses from Nigerians on what they expect to see on this proposed Web2.0 site and how to grow it.

Also observe that the contribution now and thereafter is what will make the proposed project a reality. Recognition will be given to all participants.

Many thanks
Collins

@basking4me
why are u spamming the whole place with this single post, you already created a topic for it, then why spam it all around, I guess the moderator needs to delete some of this stuffs.
I am begining to wonder if you realy have time to even build the social network you are talking about, if you can spend your time pasting spam around the place

It is indeed true that there are several blogs, forums and social networks out there being run by Nigerians but which are hugely unpatronized. One key thing such website owners have always missed is quality. If you have some of high quality to offer, your website will soon be flooded with traffic in a matter of time. You can't put up a trashy blog doing copy-and-paste and ever expect to have useful traffic. I know this out of first hand experience.

By the way, I'm Oluniyi David Ajao.

@basking4me

Yes, @mambenanje was correct about spamming with multiple single post every thread even you already created the first topic, ACCORDING TO THE Nairaland WEBMASTER RULES you need to be followed.

I, as moderator, will give you ONE CHANCE a warning!

@topic

I agreed with @mambenanje asking you why not you build your own Nigeria social network like @niyyie has said it all---there are many blogs, forums, social networks out there by Nigerians. Go look at the topic somewhere pages you will find them (Nigerian blogs, forums, social networks) at below:

@ Moderator (uspry1),

Thank you for giving me another chance, like I said ealier, I erred and am sorry.

Niyi, Thanks for contributing, are you still in Ghana?. I read your blog regularly, hoping to link up to you soon.

It is only when competition is stiff in the industry that growth becomes eminent, level of expertise vary so much that, there really isnt any means of measuring quality and standard. I would suggest a means of certifying qualitative websites and their developers.

This can atually encourage growth for the sector.
