Updates: Students Protest Ongoing Staff Unions’ Strike by Ping411: 11:58am On Jul 09, 2013 |
In reaction to the ongoing strike by University and Polytechnic staff unions (ASUU, ASUP, NASU, SSANU, SSANIP), students of various institutions across Nigeria have started a demonstration. The students, under the aegis of Concerned Students Against Education Commercialisation (COSATEC), are pressing home the demands of the agreement reached with the striking unions by the Federal Government. A student from Obafemi Awolowo University, who chose to be identified as AY Struggle, said: “The government has refused to comply with UNESCO’s recommendation that 26 per cent of the country’s budget should be allocated to education. “They only approved a mere 8.4 per cent, which is not even enough for only the art department in universities. 10 to 15 students are made to share one microscope and yet they expect the best from us.” Ganiyu Ibrahim, a student of Yabatech, described the Federal Government’s neglect of the unions’ plea as “deceitful, high-handed, insensitive and irresponsible”. Some of the students, who expressed their frustration, said that most of the administrators in power did not have kids in Nigerian institutions and that was the reason the government had had no concern for the plight of the students since the inception of the strike over two months ago.
