Court Convicts Governor Sule Lamido’s Son For Money Laundering
Premium Times - 58 mins agoNATIONAL, NEWS

Aminu Sule Lamido, the 34-year old son of Jigawa State governor, Sule Lamido, prosecuted by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission for money laundering, was Friday convicted by Justice Fatu Riman of the Federal High Court, Kano, and ordered to forfeit 25 per cent of the undeclared sum of $40,000.
But the governor’s son won’t be serving any jail term. He will walk free after forfeiture of the 25 per cent of the undeclared sum.
Aminu was arrested on December 11, 2012 at the Mallam Aminu Kano International Airport on his way to Egypt for failure to declare the $50,000 in his possession. He only declared $10,000 to the Nigerian Customs Service.
When he was arraigned before Justice Riman on Monday February 4, 2013, Aminu pleaded not guilty to the charge and was remanded in prison pending hearing of his application for bail.
The charge against the accused reads: “That you Aminu Sule Lamido on or about 11th day of December, 2012 at the Mallam Aminu International Airport, Kano within the Jurisdiction of the Federal High Court while transporting in cash, the sum of $50,000 (Fifty Thousand Dollars Only) from Nigeria to Cairo, Egypt, falsely declare to the Nigerian Customs the sum of $10,000 (Ten Thousand Dollars Only) instead of the said sum of $50,000 (Fifty Thousand Dollars Only) as required under Section 12 of the Foreign Exchange (Monitoring and Miscellaneous Provisions) Act Cap F34 Laws of the Federation of Nigeria 2004 and Section 2(3) of the Money Laundering (Prohibition) Act, 2011 and thereby committed an offence punishable under section 2(5) of the Money Laundering (Prohibition) Act 2011”.
At the resumed hearing on February 5, 2013, Justice Riman granted the accused person bail in the sum of N8million and two sureties in like sum.
In the course of trial, which got underway April 19, 2013, the prosecution called four witnesses and tendered documents which were admitted as exhibits. One of its witnesses, Sanusi Ahmed who is an operative of the EFCC, told the court that the accused person only registered $10,000 in the Nigerian Customs Declaration Form only for a search to reveal that he had $50,000 on him. He identified the Customs Declaration Form when it was shown to him. The document was accepted by court as exhibit 1.
The two witnesses called by the defence are the Chief Press Secretary to the Jigawa State Governor, Umar Kyare and the wife of the accused, Samira Aminu Sule.
At the last adjourned date, July 9, the court reserved ruling for July 12, after the parties had closed their cases and adopted their written addresses.
In convicting the accused person, the trial court held that the defence had proved its case beyond reasonable doubt.

Since the EFFC reports directly to the president, it is his duty to ensure these cases are prosecuted to their logical conclusion .
the keyword there is "LOGICAL" because this case, as with the mustapha ruling and the pension thief ruling lacks logic.
Wherever there seems to be a conflict of interest or where the judiciary looks as if it is compromised(THERE ARE FEW GOOD MEN STANDING IN THE NIGERIAN COURT) , the president ought to use his position to flag it out and use his powers to ensure that the courts are reconstituted.

By the way, what do you expect when the highest court in the land has the person of the wife of the absolutely corrupt ex-governor of rivers state in it.MARY ODILI.

Did you ignorant folks bother to look at the extant provision of the constitution against undeclared asset and asset forfeiture that guided the decision of the learned judge before trying hard to bring the status of the President to disrepute?

If in your wild fantasy as a blogger you weren't aware of the move by the Federal Government to submit an anti-graft bill that rules out the option of fine for people convicted of corruption and ensure that only proportionate punishments are meted out to very important persons convicted of corruption to the National Assembly, then I can only wish you safe journey in your journey to nowhere.

You are an Absolute TOOOL, and you ought to be ASHAMED of yourself. For God's sake, there should be a Limit our conscience, regardless of how broken itself, shld allow us do PROPAGANDA and tell bare-faced LIES with a straight face!! What d helll do you expect d President to do? Take over d case from d Judge like Ameachi did recently with his State House of Assembly? You talk of taking the case to 'its logical conclusion' and one wonders what further 'conclusion' you were talking about. The Suspect in question was arrested for UNDERDECLARATION of the money with him in d Airport and prosecuted under an Act whose MAXIMUM penalty is the Conviction of the Suspect and making him/her forfeit part of d Undeclared fund (except a separate case of Laudering as d intent of such underdeclaration can be proved). That was Exactly what happened. The Chap was CONVICTED (he is now an Ex-convict) and made to forfeit a % of d undeclared money found on him, according to d law, and exactly what other tens of persons prosecuted and convicted by d new Anti-Laudering Act, also got. What did you expect? GEJ scheming to take over and/or influence d judge to slam a sentence on Gov Lamido's son beyond d prescribed law, so that you Clowns wud have another opportunity to mastur.bate over a frivolity, abi?- Oh, GEJ is a 'dictator' and is 'prosecuting' Gov Lamido cos he is an 'Anti-GEJ' Gov?? Okpeees....

This is an opportunity for Jonathan to nail the opposition. He missed it.

I'm sure the opposition cannot believe what they are getting by Jonathan's lack lustre political savvy

Lol... Everything Jonah Jonah .... Please be mindful that 50k us is equivalent of 7.5m naira. The son of Governor can't possibly steal that sum. With or without being a governor, sule lamido is a man of means, thus this heading is misleading. Tinubu's son has spent that sum in a go in night clubs and shit in one night. I guess you will call Jonah again for that. Smh.
