Over 2000 Nigerians, including members of civil society groups, the clergy and Labour led by Nobel Laureate, Professor Wole Soyinka, yesterday, in Abuja staged a peaceful protest over the failure of President Umaru Musa Yar’Adua to handover power to his deputy, Dr. Goodluck Jonathan.

Speaker of the House of Representatives, Oladimeji Bankole, was also booed by the irate protesters in front of the National Assembly when He attempted to address them as the protesters arrive the National Legislature.

The procession of the protesters drawn from across the country which kicked off at about 10am from the Transcorp Hilton Hotel, Maitama District and terminated at the National Assembly at about 1pm featured prominent Nigerians like Femi Falana, Pastor Tunde Bakare of Latter Rain Assembly Lagos, and former President of Civil Liberty Organisation (CLO), Olisa Agbakoba as well as representatives of Labour.

The protesters carried placards, some of which read: “Umaru where are you?’ , “Let’s kill corruption, before it kills us”, “Vacuum governance equals to a failed economy”, “Black it out!” and “Terrorism, delist Nigeria now”

Speaking at the end of the protest, in front of the National Assembly, Professor Wole Soyinka said the ideal thing for President Yar’Adua who has been away from the country for 50 days on health ground to Saudi Arabia was for him to have transmitted power to the Vice President, Dr. Goodluck Jonathan, if he has the intent of leaving the country.

This issue of those who "fought" for Yar Adua to hand over power to GEJ has been over-flogged and is now a tool for blackmail.

But lets even analyse the FACTS in the matter.

For the records, what we witnessed was that Yar Adua fell ill and later died. It was inevitable that Jonathan would take over.

Yes, the Yar Adua family was initially reluctant to quit power. But that was expected. Nonetheless, no one under the sun has the power to stop DEATH.

Yes, some people protested when the Yar Adua family was battling to remain relevant but such protests was just one component in the NATIONAL clamour that the RIGHT thing be done. If Yar Adua had recovered from his ill-health, the protests would not have made any difference. Bottom line is, what the Yar Adua family tried to do then was WRONG and unconstitutional.

MAJORITY of Nigerians spoke up against it and urged that the RIGHT thing be done. People spoke on TV, radio, newspaper reports, on the streets, on the social media, through street protests, etc.

To now narrow what happened then to a street protests or activities Save Nigeria Group alone is pure mischief.

But whatever the case, DEATH had the final say.

By the way, should we because some people did something RIGHT in the past not criticise their future perceived mis-deeds? The fact that some people urged that the RIGHT thing be done then does not mean we cannot challenge their position on other matters. Every situation should be assessed and judged on its MERIT
