ormer Chief Security Officer (CSO) to the late Head of State, General Sani Abacha, Major Hamza Al-Mustapha, was yesterday received by a large crowd when he arrived at the Mallam Aminu Kano International Airport, Kano. An emotional Al-Mustapha later wept openly at the Government House, Kano, while recalling his ordeal at the Maximum Kirikiri Prison, Lagos, where he was incarcerated for about 15 years over the alleged murder of the late Alhaja Kudirat Abiola, wife of the business mogul, Moshood Kasimawo Abiola, the winner of the June 12, 1993 presidential election.

His host and Governor of Kano State, Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, said “Hamza Al-Mustapha was taken away in 1999 in tattered clothes and in chains under a pitiable situation, but today, he has returned a hero. We have always insisted that he was unjustly held. We felt concerned and decided to be part of justice.” Kwankwaso urged Nigerians to join the government in welcoming him back to Kano, adding that they should also give thanks to Allah for making his release possible after all these years.
