What Do You Think Is The Main Problem In Nigeria, And How Can It Be Tackled. by finguy(m): 10:41am On May 23, 2008
Most people will say our problem is corruption or poverty, though i agree that these are some of the reasons of our stagnation,they were born out of disloyalty and lack of patrotism that was caused by our diversity, remember the bible said a house divided among itself cannot stand. and if we look at countries that are doing well, we discover they have similar culture and language, but in Nigeria we have over 250 ethnic groups with over 100 languages, how can we ever be loyal to one country.A country with one language, culture, and goal can achieve anything, it will take God to stop them, just like he did when people with the same language decided to build a tower to heaven.(tower of babel)
Therefore in my opinion,is to to didvide nigeria into about 7-10 regions with same culture and language, and make the goverment of these regions stronger than the federal govt.something like a confederating unit, where everyone should take responsibility for their region and pay taxes and royalty to the federal center,the only oneness that should be shared is in protecting our soverignity and terriorial heritage. we should therefore have one  federal Army.
This will eradicate corruption, and other vices,because people will tend to be patrotic and loyal,as they cannot steal from their own people, but they will never do it because of the material benefits gained in the present arrangement. maybe when oil finish them go free us to progress.
what u think?

@Poster,
Do you think the country will just divide like that?don't you know that the people feeding fat on Nigeria will not allow that,though it's a good suggestion,and though it may work,i think revolution will be the best option,an example is the Rawling's situation in Ghana,total extermination of the folks that has been responsible for Nigeria's problem,leading to mind renewal and restoration in Nigeria.without this it's clearly going to be impossible especially to deal with corruption which is actually the main problem of Nigeria.A little kid in primary school in Nigeria today is praying to be a politician so that he too can steal and rescue his family from poverty and this is the notion of everyone,'go there and steal your own' .Without mind renewal and restoration of dignity to labour,and totally eradicating corruption,I'm afraid it's going be difficult.

you are right, revolution is the only answer, and its going to take place, various groups are getting conscious of the oppression, and are forming in almost all parts of the country, like the MEND, the ODUA, MASOB, etc, this is how revolution starts, all that it requires is someone to push the button and there might be a break down of law and other. and that may come from the niger delta, if the govt does not handle it reasonably

The first thing we need to do is decentralize Nigeria, then privatize every aspect of our infrastructures and petroleum, reduce the size of goverment and restructure our police by decentralizing them first.

Caution: when I say decentralize I'm not not suggesting dividing the country I meant reduce the size, role and power of the federal goverment to save money, to ensure efficiency and better management.

I don't think there is one country in the whole world that has one language.

In United Kingdom for instance, they speak English in England, Scottish in Scotland and Welsh in Wales in addition to some other languages/dialects like 'Scouse' spoken in Liverpool and 'Geordie' spoken in Newcastle upon Tyne.

The U.S.A is also a highly multilingual country. The number of languages spoken in the United States is 311 according to research. Of these, 162 are indigenous, and 149 are immigrant languages. An indigenous language is a language that is native to a region and spoken by indigenous people.

Those people are absolutely correct. Our problem is corruption of the highest order and indiscipline.

@Coolier

Germany, Korea, Japan, perhaps are countries where they each speak only one official language respectively. To make it simpler

Germany - German

Korea - Korean

Japan - Japanese

There isn't a 'main' problem in Nigeria, there are, however, problems that should be of concern to every Nigerian (at home or abroad).  The problems will not subside until efforts are made to minimize the power of the government of Nigeria over the people. Change tends to occur over time, not instantaneously.

One might think our problem is poverty, but our problem is also corruption and religious warfare, wife abuse and child abuse, inadequate health care systems, malfunctioning board of education, accident-prone roads, etc.

The poster is not talking about official language here because if he is, then in Nigeria we also have ONE official language(our lingua franca), which is English. See @poster below:-
