We Were Not Stoned In Port Harcourt Says Governor Mua ’zu Babangida Aliyu by Tofax: 4:25pm On Jul 18, 2013
The Northern States Governors Forum (NSGF) Chairman and
Governor of Niger State, Dr. Mu’azu Babangida Aliyu has
denied reports making the rounds in some media that
himself and four of his colleagues were pelted and held
hostage at the Port Harcourt International Airport, by some
sponsored political miscreants.
Although he acknowledged that some pro and anti-Amaechi
youths, carrying placards with various inscriptions were at
the airport on their arrival, Governor Aliyu said nothing was
done to them as they drove, with Governor Amaechi driving,
through the city and even inspected some on-going projects
being executed by the governor.
While wondering where such a ridiculous story might have
emanated from, the NSGF Chairman disclosed that they
were in River State to ascertain the issues and appreciate
the challenges Governor Amaechi was facing in the state
amidst recent political crisis that engulfed it.
Governor Aliyu, who spoke when he received on a courtesy
call, members of the Inter Party Advisory Council (IPAC) at
Government House, Minna, said what was happening in
Rivers State was an assault to the Nigerian constitution in
particular and democracy in general.
The NSGF Chairman stressed the need for a collective effort
to nurture the nascent and fragile democracy in the country
stressing that the political situation in Rivers State could be
easily resolved internally but for the external influences in
the matter.
He wondered why the Rivers State Police Commissioner
was so much involved in what purely was a political matter
and suggested that he might not have behaved the way he
did without support from elsewhere.
