The ideal candidate will be responsible for the editorial direction, coordination and content of the magazine by conceptualizing/planning issues, researching articles, writing articles, freelancing articles, editing articles, proofing issues, and collecting/coordinating photography and photo shoots with managing editor and art directors and also maintaining a professional presence in the community(ies) the magazine serves.

JOB TYPE:
Short Term Contract (2-3 months)

JOB FUNCTIONS

Creating, developing, proofing and editing all editorial content for the publication.

Submitting to the Managing Editor an editorial lineup with story details for each issue of the magazine, on the dates specified in the production schedule.

Assigning freelance stories and negotiating fees, developing story concepts and managing manuscripts to ensure that they are received in a timely manner and produced to the quality standards associated with the magazine.

Assist the art directors by requesting photos or asking freelance writers to request photos on their various stories, and providing art ideas to the art directors.

Provide copy for the Contents page, Editors Letter and any other pages as agreed upon by both you and the editorial staff.

Write photo captions, and other editorial pieces as needed at layout stage.

Assisting with the final layout of the magazine by proofing and correcting preliminary InDesign documents of each layout, cutting or adding copy where needed, and filling in cutlines and pull quotes where needed.

Maintain contact with the Managing Editor(s), Art Director(s), Publisher, advertising and other staff as needed; this is imperative to ensure the publication is produced to the established standards.

Manage an editorial advisory board, including annual luncheons and periodic meetings/email correspondence.

Understand and deliver on your readers’ needs

Develop and maintain productive industry, PR and commercial relationships

EXPERIENCE
At least 5-8 years working experience with a lifestyle magazine.

EDUCATIONAL QUALIFICATION
Bachelor’s degree in journalism, communications or related field.

REQUIREMENTS
Excellent writing and editing abilities; ability to write engaging and entertaining articles.

Solid knowledge of journalism, including style and format of magazine articles, interviewing, fact checking and copy editing.

Familiarity with the AP Style Guide.

Attention to detail, including correct usage of grammar and punctuation, and ability to consistently apply the MMG in-house Style Guide.

Basic knowledge of the PC environment, including Word, email, photo software, etc. Familiarity with Adobe InDesign.

Ability to establish priorities, work independently and proceed with objectives without supervision.

Ability to multitask and work on a number of projects or assignments.
