It is no longer news that the governments of Osun and Ekiti States distributed “Tablets of Wisdom” (Tablets, Mini Laptops respectively) to senior secondary school students in all the state owned public schools. While this gesture deserves commendation; we have some observation to make.

Having served as a Corp Member in a public secondary school in Emure-Ekiti, Ekiti State, I can categorically say that 80% of staffs and students cannot effectively use the computer.

My fear about the possible abuse of the laptops by the students was confirmed by a staff who said many of the students have turned the laptops to Cinema (for watching obscene films and musical videos).

This development undermines the effort and intentions of both governments, hence the need for this reflection. It is common for government officials to embark on well-intended projects but fail to put the right measures in place before implementing them. Such projects end up as abandoned projects or fail to achieve their intended purpose. Using the Tablets of Wisdom as example, what stops the government from organizing a seminar on how to use these devices for staffs and selected students before giving them out to the students?

It would have made much sense if the devices had certain permissions that will restrict students from playing videos or installing games and other softwares that are of no immediate gain to them. They could also disable the flash drive ports.

Lack of adequate planning and implementation continue to undermine the effort of government at various levels. We should learn from the story of creation, God saw that the earth was empty, dark and saw the need to create man. But He did not start with creating man. Scriptures say he commanded, “Let there be Light”. Separation of Day from Night followed before He finally created man on the sixth day of creation. He created the vegetations on the third day and Animals on the fifth day – if he created the animals before the vegetation, what will they feed on?

The story of creation teaches us the importance of proper planning. It is said that proper planning, preparation prevents poor performance. Most individuals, organization, business, governments are doing badly because of lack of a plan or poor planning.
