The Congress for Progressive Change has asked
President Goodluck Jonathan to apologise for his
involvement in the political crisis in Rivers State
and urged the National Assembly to impeach him
if he fails to do so.
The party also commended the National Assembly for taking over
the Rivers State Houses of Assembly and ordering the
redeployment of the Police Commissioner of the state, Joseph
Mbu.
The National Publicity Secretary of CPC, Rotimi Fashakin, said that
the party wants the National Assembly to compel the President to
apologise for his role in the crisis.
He said the actions of the federal lawmakers showed they were
dispassionate in handling the Rivers crisis.
He said, "As a party, we concur with the National Assembly. We
agree with their resolutions on the Rivers crisis. They seem to be
more dispassionate than the Nigeria Police. We want the National
Assembly to even go one step further.
"It is not enough to finger the President and his wife in this
unfortunate incident but the President should be made to
apologise to the nation, otherwise he should be impeached."
Fashakin added that it was wrong for the President to be involved
in destabilising a state, which was federating unit in Nigeria.
"This is because it is very sacrilegious for the President of a
nation, a federal state, to be involved in plotting and destabilising
of a federating unit. It is sacrilegious and impeachable," he said.
Last Thursday, the Senate passed a resolution empowering it and
the House of Representatives to take over the legislative functions
of the Rivers State House of Assembly.
In the resolution which concurs with that of the House on July 10,
the Senate also flayed the attempt by five anti-Rotimi Amaechi
lawmakers to impeach the state Assembly Speaker, Otelemaba
Amachree.
