Accept Yoruba Leader Or Leave Lagos-Igbo Traders Warned by Nobody: 4:28pm On Jul 29, 2013
The traders of Igbo origin operating at the Ladpo Auto Spare
Parts Market, Mushin, Lagos have been told to accept Yoruba
man as leader or leave the state.
The ordeal was handed down to the protesting
traders due to their continued resistance of
Alhaji Oladotun Abibu Oki as the Babaloja of the
market.
Lamenting their ordeal, the royal father of the market Chief
Nwosu told reporters that "99 percent of marketers in Ladipo are
Igbo. To be fair to all, he should come and contest if elected he
will be accepted. "We appeal to the South East governors, Igbo
leaders across the globe to come to our aid. They asked us to go
back to our villages, if we are not ready to accept the leadership
of Alhaji Oki. We pay our taxes in Lagos and have every right as
Nigerians to buy and sell anywhere in the state."
Meanwhile LACEC Secretary General, Pastor Steve Ijioma told
reporters : "There has been controversy over the imposition of
Alhaji Oki as the Babaloja. This led to several clashes and it was
agreed that Alhaji Oki should restrict his authority in his unit
pending when the matter is sorted out. During the environmental
sanitation, he encroached on our territory and we resisted. The
protest is to pass the message across that we do not want his
leadership rather a free and fair election should be conducted. It
is a pity that an Area Commander could openly ask us to accept
Babaloja or return to our various states."
LACEC, according to the President General, Comrade Ikechukwu
Animalu, is opposed to the imposition of Alhaji Oladotun Abibu
Oki because "out of the 34 existing units in the market, Alhaji Oki
controls only a unit. There is still an on going battle over his
appointment as the new Babaloja. It was his attempt to impose
his authority on us that led to the crisis that erupted on
Thursday. We demand a formal election, so that the people will
decide who their leader will be.
"We also appeal to the police to be fair in this controversial
matter and call to order those who openly ordered us to either
accept the imposition or return to our various states."
Stating his part of the story, Alhaji Oki said that he was ready to
dialogue with aggrieved members of LACEC to find a way forward.
He told Sun: "I was nominated two years ago to be installed the
Babaloja of the market.
LACEC through several petitions frustrated that move and the
process was delayed. However two months ago, the late Abibat
Mogaji finally installed me. To pass their message across they did
not attend my installation, which was held in June 27, 2013."

Where are the e-warriors to come to their aid? This is how they start trouble and then start calling the United nations and the Red cross.
I thought they own Lagos in the first place.

Well, I don't understand their point. Igbo leader doesn't mean everyhting would be fine. And again, in a country like this where it is by force marriage, how would that happen? is it now they realise that they have their right as Nigerians. *Yimu*

Other markets dominated by Igbos in Lagos eg Alaba international market and Trade fair, do they have yorubas as their market leader? I need to ask my uncle who trades in Trade fair.

We like to tribalise and spiritualise our problems. Yes the constitution gives you the right to live anywhere but you also have to respect traditions and laws of your hosts.

Onitsha market closes on Catholic holidays (Nov 1, Easter) I don't see other religion or Christian complain about it, why cos it is a culture.

There are some markets in Igbo land that still follow the Eke, Nkwo, market day and no visitor dares go against that.

Try to buy a land as an Hausa in Enugu and see who will sell to you

Fact is Lagos is a tolerant place and if we can't follow the little babaloja leadership issue then yes go back to our village. Yes we are good traders and sellers but it doesn't matter if you have no customer so please park well.

And to all my SE brothers in here: BABALOJA is a an Indiginous Title that does not required any Election and can not be entrust with Non Indigen. The power to appoint BABALOJA in YORUBA Land lies on the OBA (King) or BALE (Community Leader) of the town or Village. This has been the tradition of Lagos, and even when the colonial masters came to Lagos, they respect all these norms, and why must it change? For what? How many laws and customs of the South East has been abrogated for the Yorubas?

You can only say what you know, in all the eastern markets theres no yoruba presence.
If they can develop /own any portion of the market(in the east) then they are free to elect their market leader.

To my igbo brothers, this is a wake up call for you to think wisely before committing a huge investment in the foreign land.

Think wisely!

Think EAST!!

Think home!!!

4REAL!!!

Imagine this sort of shenanigan occurring in any of the ibo-dominated markets in the northern part of nigeria? Rather than bother reasoning with them like rational beings one would be inclined to believe they are, the northerners will let their daggers do the talking.Meanwhile, the price of suya suffers a great albeit a brief period, fall in price as supply suddenly far outstripped demand.

Ol' boy, don't waste your time trying to reason with these guys. Its in their nature to be mischievous. You think they don't know all these things you wrote above? Of course, they do!They have been trading in that market for decades so why is it now they want an election to choose the Babaloja. The market has been in existence since the 80's so they can't say they were not conscious of the laws and customs associated with the market.

They certainly know the score alright but being who they are, they just can't help themselves. Just have to push a little bit further until their hosts get pi.ss.off (with them)and responds accordingly. Its then they withdraw into their pet "victim mode", escape route.

Moreover you dont tell us what to do in our land. You have two choices, Shape in or ship out

You guys are just making enemies for yourselves when in actual fact you ought to be building bridges with

your neighbors. The northerners sent you lot packing from their region(though a handful of you desperados, still remain) but

most of the fleeing ibos came to yorubaland and Lagos in particular. How wise is it to abuse the hospitality and generosity

of your new host?

Woow! By 2020 ds people will reject Oba of Lagos and claim they want their man as d new Oba. Lollzzz!
Please let us put sentiment apart, in Nigeria we have customary rules even though it is informal but any body found in such place follows d rules in as much as it does not contradict Nigerian consitution.
Babaloja is a customary title peculia to Yoruba tradition, even though anybody can be nominated irespective of dia tribes, culture and tradition but anybody nominated should be accepted how ever going on rampage to change d old tradition on some ones ancestral land is a little bit too far.
The best they could do is to go to court and let court decide, base on customary practice, history and fact. This kind of disagreement do take place among Yorubas and court will settle it. D most resent is d Oba of Offa in kwara state.
