What about the use of smartphones?
Monitored or not. They are there to make things easier. Database are to keep records. That's why you get statistics for things involving Internet eg number of downloads, number of sms sent or received. Number of people who spend more times online on Facebook, number of people who are being referred per day via Facebook etc. Who get time to dey monitor millions of users. Our privacy is stored in their server but not accessible by staff except the otherwise. That was why Google sacked one of his staff for checking someone's privacy
